Default New Guy with questions!

Hey guys...just wanted to say hello and I think this is a great forum. I've been reading your posts for a while. Seems to be a lot of good guys with a lot of knowledge. I look forward to posting more. Okay now with the questions...I'll be purchasing a new rifle soon mainly to deer hunt with plus it's time to get a new toy! There is a slight chance I'll get the chance to hunt big game out West (Colorado) in the near future. Thinking about relocating. I've narrowed the caliber choice to either the 30.06 or the 7mm WSM. I'll eventually own both but I don't get to buy new rifles often so which one first? I've always wanted a 30.06 but I'm also impressed with the new short magnums. I know the 30.06 can do it all but do all of you feel comfortable with it out to 300 yrds? Now the big question...which rifle? I now this is like asking Chevrolet or Ford but I'd like to hear about personal experiences. Now, I own mostly Winchester Model 70's ('ol glory) but I'd like to get something new. I'm looking at the Browning A-Bolt (both calibers), Remington Model 700 (30.06),Remington Model 7 in the short action, and the Tikka Whitetail (30.06). I have to admit at this point I'm leaning towards the Browning A-bolt in 30.06 unless someone can talk me out of it. Just seems to be the most versatile plus everyone seems to love their Brownings. I mainly want out of the box accuracy since I'm not real gun technical just yet. Thanks for your thoughts!

Caliber is all a matter of "YOUR" favorite! As for the gun I love Remington 700's...
...And Welcome!

Hard to beat Savage for out of the box accuracy. As far as cartridge choice, I don't buy into all the short magnum hype so I would go with the 30-06 anyday.

Browning Composite Stalker, 30-06. I have one in 280 had love it. Since you are just beginning I would lean toward the 30-06 because it gives you a solid hunting rifle just in case it takes longer than expected to add another rifle to your gun cabinet. The future success of the 7mm WSM is not a sure bet and having one as your only rifle might not be the wisest choice.

DG - When did Japan take over Finland? I thought Tikka was a Finnish brand!

Winchester - owned by the same company that owns Browning
Browning - good rifles, good reputation. Percieved as a slight step of from Winchester. Seems to get took reports on this and other forums.
Tikka - very favorable reports on this and other forums.

ive shot brownings and they were VERY accurate and had the nicest feel for an out of the box rifle..i dont care for 70s and 700s much but they are both good rifles and both proved themselves i just dont like having something EVERYBODY and there whole family own...tikkas are supposta be great and ride high with guys that have shot them..i have not..and tikka IS made in finland!!! its basically all upto what you want and can spend the money on..the 70s and 700s are a bit cheaper than tikkas and brownings but dont have the high quality but still shoot....as for caliber im not all up on the magnum junk either...the 3006 has been around for 100 years (i think) and as long as i have my mauser someone will always be loading it!!!! and i love my mauser(my name shows lol) 300yds is a drop in the bucket for the 3006...just gota learn your gin way out there like any rifle..

The rifle can only be as accurate as the shooter. It doesn`t matter what you get, as long as you practice..
