I don't have either one, but if it was me I'd go with the 300 Win Mag. I am not sure how that short, fat lil case would feed in an auto rifle.
That would be my concern as well. The BAR has been made in .300 Win. Mag.long enough that the bugs should all be out of it by now.

As for accuracy, short, fat powder columns lend themselves to more uniform ignition, as there are more powder grains closer to the flash. In addition, short actions are stiffer, again improving accuracy. I have no idea how the WSM's compare to the "standard" .300's, but I do know that the cartridges based on the .284 Win. case do tend to be easier to develop really accurate loads for than those of the same caliber that are based on the .30/'06 case.

I wouldn't get either in a BAR myself. When I use my 300win, or RUM, or WSM, its always open country, and I usually hike alot, so a heavy BAR doesn't suit me. I like BAR's for thick woods, and whitetails with whitetail calibers like 308win.

But reloading wise, I can get some serious performance out of the win mag compared to the WSM. I can get subMOA out of mine with 3100fps with 180gr bullet. I can never do that with a WSM. But I have had WSM that were very accurate.

Ruger is chambering WSM in their rifles.

Funny thing is, I have heard people call them inaccurate, plenty oftimes on this forum.

I would just get the .300 Win Mag, because it's an auto, and the WSM's are short fat cases.

That the WSM's are going to be around foralong time is only partially true.

The 7mm WSM is dead. And the .270 WSM, I haven't seen anywhere in my area, since they're not popular. The .300 WSM is the popular WSM here, but no others.
I have yet to seemore than 3rifles in .325 WSM laying on the gun rack whenever I go into any store.I've only seen a .325 once or twice.

It's all going to be a regional thing, in some places, all but one of the WSM's are dead, and that one, is different in other places.
Ruger dropped the wsm in their current production rifles.
Hmmm...... Can't believe it, I don't reckon anyone saw that coming.

I own a Remington 700 LSS in the 300wsm and other than the ammo costing a small fortune, it is the best rifle I have ever owned. It is extremely accurate and does not kick too hard either. Now I do know the 700 is a lot different than the BAR, but as far as calibers go, I would not go back to the 300 mag. Just my opinion...

I would purchase the 300 winfor one reason - ammunition is available almost anywhere you go!

I agree with DGH, get the .300 win mag, almost the same ballistics without a second mortgage for ammo, let alone the avaiability!

The short mags a inherntly less acurate.
That is completely false. The exact opposite is true, from my own personal experience.

Please don't state things which you have no first hand knowledge of.

I'll state what's true. You may have a lucky gun and a good shooter to you may not be one to me. Talk to some experts. Experts that are not bought and paid for. When i have factory reps from all thew major Manufact lauging about the short mags i think I'll believe them. Along with all the Short Mags that come back because they don't shoot. The short mag belongs in a compact rifle. That is what it's for. Don't buy the hype. The round is functional It is not better than the ol 300. Also the years I've spent selling fire arms and picking the brains of experts gives me the knowlege to speak of what I know. In fact i went up north to talk to one today about the short mag. With all the reasons they state for why the short should be better none of them has panned out. On paper it is the best thing since sliced bread but it just doesn't stack up.

I have seen a lot of bar rifles and every one of them will outperform the remington semiautos so bad it's not funny. The bar IS accurate-just sometimes not quite as accurate as SOME bolt actions. If you get a bar in either cartridge-be sure and get the boss option as it really helps with accuracy. I know this for a fact as I've shot dozens of them. You will have to burn up some ammo adjusting them however.
