I have some new production 5.56 55 grain military ammo I'd like to shoot in my Remington. I heard this stuff is too hot for commercial 223 rifles, is this so?

If these rounds are safe to shoot in an M-16 they will be fine in a 700. Your 700 action is much stronger than the M-16 action. I think current military production ammo fires a 60 something(maybe 69) grain bullet not the standard 55gr.

Dimensionally the 5.56 and the 223 are identical, the difference is in the 5.56 having a higher standard pressure rating and different chamber dimensions.Often this is coupled with faster twist barrels. My question is is the 700 ADL compatible with the 5.56 ammo. Also the military uses a variety of different 5.56 in their rifles from 55 to over 70 grains.

rickt300, If designation of ammo is correct, XM193, then this is experimental ammo and you probably shouldn't have your hands on it. I should have noticed that in my first post. Any military designation beginning with "X" means experimental. Because of this I can't say that these are safe to use in any rifle. Normal military 5.56mm NATO ammo is safe to use in your 700ADL. I've been shooting surplus ammo in my 223 for years with no problems. The case dimensions and chamber size for a 5.56mm NATO and 223 Remington are identical, they are exactly the same round. The differance in barrel twist rate in based on what weight bullet the manufacturer feels will be used most often. A heavier and long bullet requires a faster twist to achieve acceptable accuracy. Happy shooting

In doing some research on this I found a really good site that deals with the 5.56/223 round. www.ammo-oracle.com/#diff The XM193 marking on this ammo means that it is loaded to military specifications, not reccomended for use in 223 chambers. I will shoot it im my AR 15 and use the brass for reloading.
