RE: 30-30

It would be well worth the time and effort to seek out a used Winchester 94 and have it cleaned up. No better rifle to start out with and a heck of a lot of fun. That's just my humble opinion.

I just picked up a Savage 340 in 30/30 today. I has what looks to be factory peep sites on it.

Try 200 yards.
There has been a couple of threads recently on Marlinowners where guys have been doing range work at 200 and 300 yards with their 30-30's. I know that attaining long range accuracy with a 30-30 is very do-able especially with the creation of the LeverEv ammo, but for me, I have other guns in calibers better suited to "long range" shooting.

If you do your part, there's no reason at all to worry about a 30-30 using LeveRevolutions out beyond 200 yards. I would probably even go to 250 or 300, depending on the circumstances. Hornady indicates if you set your sights to hit 3" high at 100 yards, they'll hit dead on at 200.

And, at least on antelope, they hit like a bolt thrown from God Himself at 200 yards. I hit a doe at that range this weekend and the bullet took out ribs on both sides and left an exit wound you could push a golf ball through.

The new LeveRevolution shells from Hornady are fantastic.
I whole heartedly agree! Here is a boar from Monday evening taken with my 336SS and LeverEvs. The shot was 150 yards quartering away at full run, and I aimed at the end of his snout at ear level. BOOM! FLOP! I hit him an inch behind and under his left ear.

It's nothing short of incredible what Hornady's done for the old 'rainbow arched' 30-30. Used to be if you wanted to shoot something 200 yards with a 30-30, you practicallyhad to tilt the rifle up into the sky like you were part of a 21-gun salute.

Imagine how many deer would have been taken with a 30-30 if these shells had come along 60 years ago. We probably wouldn't have any left! :D
