Winchester made them for nearly a century. Right up until 2006. You'll see them made again in the next two years, and while they might read Winchester.... if they aren't made in New Haven.... then they really won't be Winchesters... kind of subjective of me... but thats how I role.

Marlin is a fine piece. Get it, love it, shoot it and tell us all about it!

Are you just talking about lever guns, or anything that chamber the 30-30 round?

No matter what make of gun you choose, the 30-30 cartridge is a super round for short range (inside 150 yards) deer killing.

Twenty five years ago, my Dad started me with a Marlin 336 30-30, and after many years of "magnumitis", I have returned to my roots. Last season, I killed 4 deer and 3 hogs with the new Hornady LeverEvolution ammo and am more impressed with the round than ever.

Try 200 yards. And it kills moose just fine too.Last year my 14 year old dopped his 1 st. moose with a 170 gr Hornady handload out of a H+R single shot. This trainer I picked up to drill into my boys heads the importance of making the first shot count..........Harold

ORIGINAL: Pioneer2

Try 200 yards.
There has been a couple of threads recently on Marlinowners where guys have been doing range work at 200 and 300 yards with their 30-30's. I know that attaining long range accuracy with a 30-30 is very do-able especially with the creation of the LeverEv ammo, but for me, I have other guns in calibers better suited to "long range" shooting.

For the way that I hunt and where I hunt, nearly all of my shots on game are under 75 yards.

I started with a 30-30 myself, but the truth is that many other cartridges kill just as well at short ranges, and much better at longer ranges.

Wow, I did a quick look around at most of the major gun makers sites and not many make a 30-30 anymore. I was sort of shocked. I thought I saw some 30-30 bolt actions before but I don't see any listed. Just lever guns and single shots. I figured surely Henry would make one, but nope. Your best bet from what I can tell is a Marlin.

If you like that round though and want a bolt action or semi auto look into a 7.62x39, pretty close in ballistics if you get premium ammunition.
