...the truth is that many other cartridges kill just as well at short ranges, and much better at longer ranges.
I agree whole heartedly, and I have a $3400 Blaser R-93 Tracker in 308 topped with a $850 Swarovski scope that fits that bill. I still just prefer shooting a Marlin 30-30.

I really like the NEF 30-30. No limitation on bullet shape and the gun shoots really well. Its still a 150-200 yard maximum range rifle. I also have a 300 Savage and 308 so I don't use the 30-30 when longer shots are likely.

You can get a 30-30 bolt action single shot and lever . Probly alot more models but the ole marlin 30-30 is hard to beat for close range .

Yup...

My Marlin .30-30 is for close in action in the heavy woods. Plain ol' open sights and the shot might be, at best, 50-75 yards. It's my go-to gun that I always reach for.

But now for longer range shots,I picked up a Savage bolt action in .308 complete with a 3-9x32 scope, for a heck of a price earlier this past spring. It is wickedly accurate and can do way more than the .30-30 but I'll use it for longer 100-200 yard shots.

winchester, sears, and savage ( model 99 ) for lever action and there are others that make single shots and bolt actions too.

Pretty hard not to love a Winchester 94 in 30-30.

Or a Savage 99

The new LeveRevolution shells from Hornady are fantastic.

On my list of rifles to obtain is the Stevens 30-30/20 guage over under. That would be the ultimate hunting rifle for when we are getting firewood in the fall. Turkeys, grouse, bear, cougar, deer and even an elk if it isnt too far away would all be game.

I whole heartedly agree! Here is a boar from Monday evening taken with my 336SS and LeverEvs. The shot was 150 yards quartering away at full run, and I aimed at the end of his snout at ear level. BOOM! FLOP! I hit him an inch behind and under his left ear.

I have a Savage model 340C bolt action that my dad gave me about 30 years ago and I killed my 1st deer with it, a 7pt, I love this gun. I don't know if Savage or any of the others make a bolt action 30-30 anymore or not.

Marlin is a fine piece. Get it, love it, shoot it and tell us all about it!
And, if you get a Marlin, make it a .35 Rem. instead of a .30-30.........
