RE: 300 Ultra Mag for Brown Bear
It better flatten that bear like a doormat, cause I really don't want to be eating my shoe for the confidence that I have in it.[:'(][:'(][:o]Because we all know that it can never be the hunters fault with bear/deer/elk/caribou fever and a misplaced shot.:eek::D:D

RE: 300 Ultra Mag for Brown Bear
ORIGINAL: ShatoDavis Its the age old lighter/faster vs. heavier/slower debate. I myself opt for the heavier/slower side myself. That being said I would say that the 300 ultra would certainly do the job. Everybody is getting their panties bunched on this thing, assuming that the guide was ordering the customer to buy a new rifle. I seriously doubt thats how it was said. I would say that he simply stated his preference. As said before, people go brown bear hunting every year with a bow. I would say that you take a rifle that you are comfortable with. If you are comfortable taking the 338 great your guide will be happy. If not, then take the ultra as I'm quite certain that it will do the job. Your guide will cope I'm quite certain. |
RE: 300 Ultra Mag for Brown Bear
Yeah Kodiak,
and the poor guide gets absolutely no assurances whether or not the chuckle head that's showing up knows how to handle that 308 well or not. As a matter of fact more time than not the client doesn't know how to shoot. In that case I wouldn't recommend he bring a 308. I would prefer he bring a damn howitzer. but, I'm not a guide. |
RE: 300 Ultra Mag for Brown Bear
Shato,
get certified as a guid and I will hunt with you. You will get the best of both worlds. I will bring a howitzer (.338 Lapua) and I really do know how to use it.[8D]:D:D |
RE: 300 Ultra Mag for Brown Bear
Just my opinion, but if a chucklehead shows up and doesn't know how to handle a .308, there's no way in he!! he's going to know how to handle a .338 WM and that little bit of extra weight/power isn't enough to make up for it. A gutshot bear with a .338WM is going to be just as mad as a gutshot bear with a .308. If somebody doesn't know how to handle his rifle, he shouldn't be hunting something that can eat him. I think it's a little silly to suggest that you can make up for lack of skill by simply stirring a big magnum into the pot.

That's why good outfitters require hunters to shoot at their range when they get into camp; so the guide knows that the client is competent. |
RE: 300 Ultra Mag for Brown Bear
cz2506. You are right on, there were some 375's around but not many and the 338 was not even a thought yet. My only point is that hunters used what they had and you are correct to assume the surplus ammo and rifles made the 30-40 popular. However it was a potent performer with the heavy bullets it used.
I have read that when hunters hunted big bears with the old flintlocks that they had about a 50/50 chance against a Grizzly. Of course I wasm't there to confirm those odds:D. |
RE: 300 Ultra Mag for Brown Bear
Just remember when you go that you don't need to be able to outrun the bear, just the slowest person in your party:D;).
I love that joke. Paul |
