I own rifles chambered for both cartridges and in all honesty while the ultra mag offers 50 to 70fps more velocity than the stw ,I prefer the stw.The ultramag case is so large that you must burn a great deal of extra powder for a very small gain in velocity and barrel life is even shorter.I do find that the 300 ultramag is a much better use for the big ultra case.I use a rockchucker to load both rounds.

I had the same question a while back but decided to go with the 7RUM. I think Remington will offer more factory choices with premium bullets, and weights. I don't reload, so I felt the 7RUM will be a better choise down the road. Looking at the balistics, the 7RUM holds a minimal edge as far as speed and energy, to small of a difference to use as the deciding factor. I really can't comment on the accuracy of the STW, but my Remington 700 can usually print an inch or less pattern at 100 yards using factory 160gr Nosler Partitions.

I have tried the 120gr ballistic tip at the range and it does shoot well.I would not however hunt big game with it as I am just not sure that it will hold together at speeds approaching 3700fps.
