I'd only be guessing without seeing the picture, but it sounds like one of the Russian or Finnish Moisin Nagant variations...

Are you sure about being ISSUED to your grandfather..??.. I know of no straight bolt rifles issued to US troops...

alright, I'll describe it untile i get the pics. Made in 1929; not in shooting condition (splits the case when fired). Has receiver and hammer that resembles a mosin nagant. Very long, about 3.5 - 4 ft. Military issued to my great grandfather.
Never seen a Mosin-Nagant that had a hammer.........

After the collapse of the Czarist regime in 1918, the US gov't seized a great number of M/N rifles that were made here (Rem. & N.E. Westinghouse), and used them for training rifles because the M1903's and M1917's were in short supply.

In addition, the 27th U.S. Infantry (Wolfhounds) Regiment thatwent to Vladivostok, Siberia to fight the Reds were issuedM/N'sinstead of 03's due to ammo supply problems....... http://www.kolchak.org/History/Siberia/aef.htm

Eldeguello.... Thanks for the history lesson..Very interesting... If it were one of THOSE M/Ns it would be a very interesting specimen collector wise..

When Chris mentioned a hammer I just assumed he was referring to the bolt knob...

yes, thats what I meant when I said hammer. And referring when I said it was issued, that is what I am guessing because this gun was used on the feild.

It looks like the bottom one, just that it doesnt have the wood going all the way down the barrel.
