The sad truth is neither one of these will do anything any better than it's grandpa the "30-06".
Maybe on smaller animials that's true, but it sure isn't on the bigger ones...

For brown bears and moose, i'd pick my .338-06 over my 3006 every time!

IMO there are two very deserving wildcats that should become standard factory chambering.....the 6.5-06 and the .338-06......both are not only excellent but in the common and useful range for most hunters.

Technically the 338-06 is not a wildcat, back in 1998 I beleive it was registered with SAAMI by A-Square and was once availible in the Weatherby lineup. I have a buddy that has one and it's quite a rifle/cartridge combination.

shot the 25-308 over chrono today. With 117 gr hornady interlock RN and imr4831, it averaged about 2865 fps. That is virtually identical to the .260 w/ 120 gr bullet and imr4831 and about 100 fps faster than the bob or savage with a comparable load. I am not showing any pressure signs yet and have enough room for another 1 to 1.5 gr of powder. I might get 3000 with a 117 gr pill.

According to the ballistics calculator, with a 200 yard zero, it will drop 7.4 at 300 with a velocity 2228 and 1289 ft/lbs. Those numbers are just about dead on the same as a 243 and 260 at those distances.

Which answers my original question. There is no real need for a factory 25-08. It's fun, but many others do the same.

Each gun is different, but I suspect the relationship between the .25 Souper and the .257 Roberts CARTRIDGES would be the same as that between the .243 Win. and the 6mm Remington, the .260 Rem. and the 6.5X57mm, and the 7mm'08 and the 7X57mm. The .257 Roberts holds about 55 grains of water, and the .25 Souper holds around 52, depending on make of brass in both, of course.

Given the correct powders, a larger capacity case can always be loaded to produce higher velocitiesthan one that holds less, if both are loaded to the same peak pressures. The way the rounds using the .308 case manage to produce such high velocities is by being loaded to higher pressures.

I am not a partisan of either round, having only owned one .25, a .25/'06. This is merely a general comment .

Now, you know that isn't true!! I'm always seeing guys on this site saying their 308 Win. is every bit as fast as anyones 3006!!!

And how about all those .338-06's getting .338 Win Mag. V's? AND, those 280 Rem's getting 7 Rem. Mag. V's?????

You got's to be wrong!!

Hats off to El"D" and DM. There aren't any free lunches I'm afraid. Here is a quote from the Hornady Handbook 3d edition on the 264 WM....." Many 264 owners have quickly discovered that the price of ultra high velocity is reduced barrel life. As a matter of fact, we burned out several barrels in developing the loading tableswhich follow. The game hunter who shoots only a few dozen rounds a year with his 264 will have no special problems. Moderate loads whenever possible will help prolong the 264's barrel life".

IMHO,a terrific wildcat is the '06 Ackley and the 35 Whelen/improved. The gunwrighters play these cartridges down so they can get their money grubbing hands on the big pot of money the manufactures feed them....and you don't need to limit your shooting to a Few dozen rounds. These are just my thoughts and 45.....no 46 years experience reloading.

OBTW, I own a 6.5-'06 Imp....decent on deer, however, not my choice for larger. Regards, Rick.
