Ditto... For whitetails. Although, in my experience, "just enough gas" is probably an understatement. I'd say "plenty of gas"...

Tyler: You need more details. Hunters hunt everything from Cottontails to Elephants. My favorite for one would not be my favorite for the other.

I used .270 for years and in 1995 switched to 6.5 mm.

The cartridge I chose was the 7-08 which is the .284 cal. Since it's a .284 then my choice for whitetails would be the 7mm mag cartridge.

I chose the .308, lower recoil, similar ballistics and power of the 30-06, and the .308 is very accurate, I like mine.
The .308 is also the parent to another great cartridge, the 7mm-08, which is great for whitetail, but perhaps slightly iffy for elk when using factory loads.

Come on nc... Everyone knows that a .243 isn't potent enough to put a good scare into a ground squirrel. :D
