243 how far ?

RE: 243 how far ?
I have taken many deer with the bullet mentioned. It provides excellent performance and is far superior to the mentioned 85 grain Sierra. Most have been 100-200 yard shots, a couple 200-300 yard. How far you can shoot away your target can be is really up to you...just how good are you?

Anyone want to talk about the 1000 lbs. energy rule of thumb?
Anyone want to talk about the 1000 lbs. energy rule of thumb?
First explain to me how a .357 mag , (which is probably the best hunting handgun caliber. Has a meer 400-500 ft lbs of energy at 50 yds) kills so well ?

RE: 243 how far ?
Although I think the .243 would kill a deer farther away, 300 yards max is as far as I'd recommend ANYONE take that shot. I have hunted deer with a 6mm for years and have killed dozens with it out to around 300 and I would feel confident taking a shot out to 500 with a bigger gun on a good target, but, if we're all always concerned with the animal itself, than there is just too much possibility of something wrong happening with that small a bullet that far away. I would have shot farther in my youth, but it would not have been the right decision.

RE: 243 how far ?
Zerexpilot....yeah, I know that PLENTY of deer have been killed with sub-1000 lb. energy guns. All I asked is if anyone wantee to talk and defend or debate the 1000 lbs. theory. The man wanted to know, as I understood it, how far you could kill a deer with a .243. Most of the ballisticians and big time hunters have touted the 1000 lb. rule. That rule being that it NORMALLY takes that much energy to be sure that you have enough at that rsnge to quickly and effectively do the job.
With that said, I am not defending or decrying the statement, simply asking for opinions.
Do you also feel that a .410 with punkinballs is an adequate deer gun, just because some people have killed deer with it?
