I prefer the Rugers, I like the action better andthe bolt handle is better. I had a 700 VLS in .223 1/2" groups at 100 yards. In the winter the knereled bolt handle doesn't feel as nice as the smooth 77. I sold it and got a standard 77 Mk II in .223 and can shoot just over a 1/2" at 100 yards. Both are good guns but I would get the .308.
