Default Remington 700 XCR thoughts and what caliber?.300WSM or .300RUM?

I'm wondering what you think in general of the XCR rifles? Is that Trynite coating all its cracked up to be? I just don't know whether I want to go that route or just stainless sps. I religiously clean my weapons regularly even when not in use but for the just in case situations it might be worth it. Now my next question is which cal.? I like the ol 30-06 but I have several friends with .300WSM rifles and I *love* these rifles. Irarely hunt under 150 yards but I would like to be prepared. But how does the WSM compare to the Rem. Ultra Magnum? I'm unfamiliar with the .300RUM having never shot one.

If most of your shots are going to be within 150yds, you really don't need a 300RUM. It packs quite a bit more punch than the 300WSM. In all reality, you don't need a 300WSM at that range either. Especially if you're just shooting deer. A 30-06 would be plenty. It works just fine on elk all of the way out to 300-400 yards. (Possibly even farther if you're a good enough shot, but I personally wouldn't try it).

But if a 300WSM is what your heart is set on, get it. Otherwise, you may regret your purchase later on.

I have owned 3 RUM's and a WSM. Let me put it this way, make sure you shoot the RUM before buying one. They can be a handful, and intially factory ammo was 32 dollars/box, I heard that has shot up to 50 dollars. Also, I littley shot out one at 1000 rounds or morre, and had heat cracks in the throat of another I had built within 500 rounds. I did load them hot however.

The WSM was pretty nice. Recoil very managable for the everyday shooter, and decent performance. I used the RUM's for moose hunting in canada, but wouldn't hesitate to shoot a moose at 300 yards with a WSM.

I wouldn't use either on deer, but like both for elk and moose.

I have two XCR's and relly like the finish. I've been in the rain with other SST rifles that still get surface rust but the Trinite finish on the XCR does not rust! I personally like the grips in the stock.

As far as the caliber I would go with the WSM as well. Lots more options with factory ammo, and the recoil is not bad at all either.

Let us know what you decide either way.

I would go with the 300 WSM or better yet the 300 Win Mag. That is if you really think you need to go the Magnum route. Personally the 270 or 280 would be my first choice.

Well I know I can get by a with a lesser caliber, but I would prefer to never be left undergunned. I just really like the 300WSM after shooting my buddies rifles. I plan on traveling in coming years and longer shots will most likely be presented. It's primary duties will be whitetail and elk however. Anything larger and I'll go 45-70. What is the largest load I can get factory for the WSM? I haven't got to go to Gander Mt. lately, they did have some XCRs and I neglectfully didn't look at them too much. I've always been a levergunner, never carried anything else. So this is a whole new field for centerfire hunting for me.

I would say forget the WSM, get the .300 Win. Mag, it's a more familiar cartridge, and it's more popular, plus I think there's more factory ammo availability.

I have a friend who has a 300 Win. Mag, and he likes it, and I have another friend who has a 300 WSM XCR, but it's an earlier model I guess, and he constantly has trouble chambering a round, he uses the Winchester XT bullets, the ones that replaced the Failsafe ones, and the bullets he uses have a plastic ballistic tip on it, and he had so much trouble chambering, the plastic tip actually broke once!!!!

I'm not sure if his is a normal case, but the rifle was new, and he was having trouble with that. His son did shoot a doe with it that year, so the rifle can definately kill, but if you are hunting elk, guides suggest you get two shots at the elk, so that you don't have to track too much, and if your rifle has trouble feeding, that'll be a problem.

I would still suggest getting the .300 Win. Mag, the case isn't so fat.

The Browning Lever action comes in 300 WSM and I think still comes in 300 Win Mag. If you don't want to be under gunned you might watch for the new 375 Rugers to hit the stores.

don't tempt me with ridiculous firepower, please. because I really want a .375 H&H. Guy I know hunts deer around here with one and just uses some really light loads. With those loads recoil seems less than a WSM. Is there any place I can view the differences in all the .300s? I thought the WSM has like 20% more energy than the regular win mag. I may be wrong though. And I did consider the BLR so I didn't leave my levergunning but I just don't think they feel that good to shoulder and the Remingtons always have.

You could got to a shooting range, and ask to shoot someone else's guns, but just be sure to bring some money, so you can pay for the ammo you have fired.
