If you are comparing it to a marlin lever action, the marlin is the better gun, but it costs more as well. However the henry has a smoother action. The marlin has a better trigger though.

My dad has a marlin 39 and it shoots pretty good, but my henry was more accurate. I may have gotten lucky with my gun though.

Mine never had any feeding problems with any type of ammo, even when I mixed brands and sizes. Gobbled them right up, one of the things I like about a lever action.

Since you are just using it for plinking and small game, I would go for the .22, just on the cost of the ammo.

ORIGINAL: Bowflex

I am a HUGE fan of the Henry standard model .22
For the money they can't be beat.

The only fault I have experienced in over 10,000 rounds through mine is they don't chamber well unless you hold the rifle level.

Good Hunting,
Bowflex

I too am a fan of the Henry H-001 .22, it is great shooter. I also have a Henry Golden Boy in .17HMR it too is a great shooter. Yesterday I put it on a solid bench and shot a .750 5 shot group. I shot a 1 1/16 off a wobbly bench.

If a person wants to shoot a bunch the .22 is the way to go, if you can afford the ammo the .17HMR is a fun rifle.

get the 22 due to the fact of the price of ammunition

I say .17hmr. I would buy one but I'm waiting in hopes of Marlin introducing one. I'd prefer to leave my loyalties for a rifle with them. Unless I find a good deal on another 39A I told myself after my Marlin .17 boltgun I would never willingly spend money on another .22. It may cost abit more to shoot but daaaang its a whole new world of rimfire with that little thing.

IMO the 22 has longer range, and is every bit as accurate as the 17. The 17 will be louder. Also you can shoot CB's in your 22 for squirrel hunting. I use them, and they are very quite. I am assuming you are shooting a Model 39 Marlin. The Henry is not comparable in quality to the Marlin you are shooting. It is a lesser gun. Save up a little more money and get a Marlin or a Winchester. You will not be sorry.

I have a used Winchester 9422 I am selling for $425. It is a great rifle. But I will be honest. I have a Marlin that I would never sell. It is a real shooter, and it was my dad's. Tom.
