RE: whats the best deer brush gun for the hills of WV
Most people in Pa refer to the 30-30 as a "good brush gun" Many deer have fallen to it over the years that's for sure. I'll stick with my 7mm08 though.

I picked the 30-06 only because there was no .308 on the list, I just traded for a Savage 99C in .308 that will become my short range deer rifle.

The 30-30 is considered a good brush gun for the way it handles in the brush, not the way it shoots through it. It's basicly a small gun that handles very well in tight spots and shoots very well at close distances without a scope. It's also very quick and easy to get on target because of its sights andsize.Iron sight 30-30 is the only way to go after deer in thick brush. Not my favorite way to hunt them though.

Buck shot is not legal in WV.
It sounds like you guys do not like leverguns. IMO the definition of a "good brush gun" is: Fast handling, fast follow up shot, heavier bullet to minimize deflection(a 45-70 at 1600 fps will definitely deflect less than a 150 grain bullet at 3000 fps--and do not bother me with your stats, I have been shooting to long to believe a chart), open sights or low power scope, and shots out to 100 yards.
If you use a scope then go with a Marlin 45-70. I you want open sights then there is probably no better choice than an 1886 Winchester in 45-70. And do not believe these guys about accuracy-lever actions will shoot. Any 30-30 is also a fine choice if price is an issue(good price on rifle and ammo).Obviously a lever is not as accurate as a bolt rifle, but if you can show me one deer that can tell the difference between a 1/2 inch group, and a 1-1/2 inch group----well you know the rest of that line. And their are very few shooter'sand rifles's that are truly capable of 1/2 inchgroups.
The Remington pump rifle is also a fine choice. Go with the 30-06, with the Carbine length barrel. Load a 200 grain Sierra at about 2400 fps. This is a devastating deer load. I have shot alot of deer with this load, and it knocks them off their feet.
Buying a good quality lever action and shooting it alot with open sights will make you a real rifleman, and a true hunter. I am not knocking the more modern weapons(I own too many of them). It is hard to explain the feeling of casting your own 45-70 bullet, and shooting black powder in your rifle. Maybe it is thejust the smell of the powder-I do not know. But if you try it you will like it. Tom.

What's the definition of a brush gun?If you're asking what gun will shoot through brush the best, there is no answer because no guns do that.Deer are killed by shooting around brush, not by shooting through it.My choice for the best brush gun is the one that's most accurate and that I shoot the best.I want to be able to shoot tyhrough a small hole in the brush without having anything deflect the bullet.

.308 Win.
I think a 7mm Rem Mag is more of a long-range cartridge, the velocity is higher, so it doesn't expand as well at close range as much as the .308 does.
That's my opinion.
Could you add .308 Win. on the list?
