Who had the best weapons of WWII?
#62
When talking about Firearms and light arms the United States had the best weapons available in the war. Not to say that the Germans didnt have great toys of there own. The Germans had a great machine gun and of course they prefected the concept of the assualt rifle.
But the fact that the United States possessed the M1- Garand which was probably the most effective weapon of the war. It was used in all theaters of the war, and was the first semi-auto gas powered rifle to be used by any military force. Previous to that you either had Bolt action rifles like the 1903 springfield (great weapon in-itself) or heavy machine guns like the browning .30 and .50 cal. the 30-06 Garand is said to be the greatest weapon of the war by modern historians. The BAR and Thompson automatic weapons were also excellent weapons, heavy rate of fire, lightweight (considerably) and reliable. Made mobile automatic power the staple of US ground tactics. Allowed suppressive fire to be placed by single soldiers that could move around instead relying on 3 man squads with tripod mounted machine guns.
when talking about tanks and armor, hands down it was the germans, well until 1944 anyway then the USSR's tigers took the title. Production was the key. The US Sherman wasnt great but there ability to swarm is what made them so effective.
When talking about aircraft the american p-51's and f6f's were the kings of their airspace, the p-51's even beat out the German Jet planes.
Ships: US navy's essex class carrier won the war in the pacific (along with thousands of marines) Japanese and germansbuilt great battleships but by 1941 battleships were obsolete.

Have you guys heard of the M2 Johnson Carbine?
Cabelas has two, and on Mail Call, they showed it. Pretty cool gun, but it was practically totally for paratroopers.
