Well your basic loads for the ol' 30-30 are the 150 grain and the 170 grain. Each 30-30 i've shot has preferred one over the other but usally not by much. For most people it's what they want or are used to. Myself, I use Winchester 150 grain power points supreme. Shoot's great in my gun, has good effect on deer and doesn't drop quite as much as the 170 grain. For the 30-30 you will find that 150 yards is pretty much your max. *though people have and will use them further, this is my longest shot I will take due to drop and decrease in power) I use my 30-30 when i'm hunting areas where my shots will be 75 yards and less and it has never let me down.

each gun is differant and will shoot differant ammo better than others.the 30-03win i used to own really did not shoot the best groups with any particular bullet.
now since i hunted in maine where the big boys roam. i opted for the 170gr. because of that. ammo is cheap $8.99 - $33.99.( partition's ).i would buy a box of each of the same gran size and see what your gun likes. the best i found my old 30-30win to like was federal classic HI-SHOK's 170gr.
150yds would be max unless you use a scope and sight it in at 3" high at 100yds. but it should be kept IMHO with iron sights or peep sights.

My 30-30 has always liked 170 grain Core-lokts, ive tried 150's but they dont seem to shoot as good as 170's. I have taken many deer with the big corelokts and they do the job.
