RE: winchesters.
Gregwth7mmmag, I agree completely with your statements about Winchester and Remington. Although my problems with Remington were cosmetic, my Winchester Classic outwardly appears to be of higher quality than my latest Remington purchase (700LSS in 300RUM). I think Browning does in fact make Browning guns. I am certain the specifications and tolerances are unchanged. The gun is manufactured in Japan, but the rifle is a Browning regardless of where it is manufactured. Browning and Winchester are both owned by the same parent company and share many ideas (BOSS at one time and WSM currently); I think the parent company is German (not US). Although I am not certain, I believe Weatherby is now manufactured in the US after a stint in Japan.

"The Rifleman"s Rifle". I like the win. model 70 Classic for three reasons #1- crisp, easily adjusted trigger. #2- mauser claw extractor. #3- Last but, not least, the three position safety, as "big country", "lite" and "Greg" mentioned. I've hiked and crawled mile after mile thru brush and branches, over boulders across rough elk country and not once has the safety come off.

RE: winchesters.
i never liked the 3 position saftey. my shots can get real close and that clicking sound when you put the satey off will let my postition go to deer since i lately get them to go under 20yds.
dcan..

Quilly, at under 20 yards,I'd think you find the movement of shoulding your rifle and the much bigger issue of the deer smelling you, than you'd ever have with the deer hearing your safety.
I also prefer the Model 70 design over the 700 as well.

Historically, the Winchesters have always been regarded as the better guns. But Remingtons were always thought of as serviceable, safe and accurate but less expensive until very recently. I don't know if Winchesters are still considered better> Both companies have had quality control problems lately!!
