I should be okay with the barrel burnout since I don't think I've fired of that many rounds in my life.

I have had 3 of them. Got one when it firstcame out. I thought ammo was 30/box. But I reloaded for it. Great gun for those who will take the time to practice alot with it, at long range. Here's the bad part. By the time you master that badboy, you have came close to wearin it out. I had one built for me, and it shot sub0.5 MOA. I mean I was shooting some 5" groups at 500 yards. After about 500-600 rounds, I started getting heat cracks in the neck of the chamber.
My first one, I burnt out the barrel in 900 rounds. I now shoot a 300Win mag. I just needed more barrel life. Its not the gun for a beginner. One really has to know the basics of shooting to handle one. I think someone really needs to shoot alot to handle one. Recoil is right below brutal.

You know the saying "A man has got to know his limitations", well it really applies to this rifle. I completly agree with what has been said earlier.I've shot rifles on a regular basis all my life, granted I don't have 30 years experience at 23 or anything but I'm comfortable shooting. I got one almost 2 years ago now, and after the first 3 shots I thought it's not so bad and after boxof the bench I felt it. Looking back it was a big jump up, but I'm gladI did it.As a peice of advise I'd stay off the bench as much as possible, and get real comfortable before you start shooting prone with it. Practice alot with it, the caliber has alot to offer.
P.s. Once you master this one it's all down hill

Well,
It is a worthy cartridge to master, I'll certainly buy that....

Fear not, thereis additional "worthy territory" out there that you may find slightly up hill.

And you got a 300RUM? it takes quite a bit of practice to ultilize the potential of a rifle like that. Its definatley not for the once a year sight in shooter.

guess I'll have to get 460 weatherby, now that my 300 feels like a .22lr.
Ha ha...
but seriously, I would like to get a 460 just for fun.

The 300 ultra is an awesome gun with a lot of recoil. I stayed away from it for that reason and went with a 300wsm. The last thing I wanted was a gun that would make me start flinching. That is the only reason that I stayed away from it otherwise that would have been my choice.
