"The WSM's are the solution to a problem that never existed, .."

Well, the shorter length action is one bonus....

Mossberg

I agree with Mark in NE's first post, why beat yourself around for no reason, the 7mm-08 or 270 win will do the job with some to spare.

If you want more look at the 270wsm but for what your after the 7mm-08 would be fine, the deer wont know the difference!

My advice would be go with the lucky 7's, either one the rem mag or short mag. Twenty eight caliber is the best for penetration. I would take a 7 mag over a 300 any day. The longer, more slender bullet of a .28 will out penetrate the short fat .30 any day of the week. I love my 7mm Rem Mag, but may go with the ultra mag short next year in a smaller lighter gun.

No the WSMs do not out-perform 7mm Rem Mag and the 300 Win Mag. Its all a load of crap. The 270 WSM is faster than the 270 Win, but not as fast as the 270 Weatherby Mag.

BeltedMag, show me evidence in the field that the 7mm has so much more penetrative power than the 308 bullet. Dead deer tell no tales.

Having said that I will admit that since I got my 7mm-08 Rem that my 300 Win Mag has seen no action. I really don't need that much punch for deer.

WSM cost more to but and more to shot for ammo, than the traditionals. If you buy factory ammo (like said) you are very limited at this point and availablity is an issue as well. I don't believe they are better than their long action pals, i guess if your a short action guy and need less weight maybe a good choice.

I have used a 270 and several 30 cals for deer, all work well. However i have now gone to the 7 Rem Mag, I couldn't be happier and it is all i need for lopers-moose. Shells are cheaper and recoil is less than the 300 win Mag. But either would be a good choice.

Just buy what you want and you'll be happy. I know many tried to talk me into other calibers, but in the end I wanted the 7 Rem Mag cause of it's flat shooting, it provided me extra punch than the 270(I prefered to use on Whitetails), range of game I could take and bullet styles. I didn't ever use 200 Gr or up with my other 30 cals, so never saw the need to buy a 300 win just in case. Bonus was cheaper shells than the 300 win Mag!

Of the calibers you mentioned, I would select the .300 Win Mag. The .300 WM has a greater selection of factory bullets over any of the short magnums. I would choose .300 WM over the 7 MM Mag because of the handloading opportunities should you ever go that route. There seems to be more bullets for .308" than .284". All the calibers on your list, as well as those mentioned in the replies are top notch.

All three numbers will whack deer with authority to any range you might want to kill one. Go with which ever one appeals to you most.

Personally, though, I'd go with a .270 WSM. <img src=icon_smile_cool.gif border=0 align=middle>
