For you to shoot with any accuracy at long range you have to have a round that launches a bullet fast enough to have the bullet still be supersonic at the target range (the bullet also has to have a good enough ballistic coefficient). The .308 and 22-250 won't come close to keeping a bullet supersonic at 1500 yds. The .308 takes a 30" barrel to get up enough velocity to keep a 155 gr bullet supersonic at 1000 yds, no way will it make 1500. When a bullet goes from supersonic to subsonic (roughly 1000-1100 fps) the pressure wave shifts around and accuracy goes to pot. That's why it takes big rounds shooting big streamlined bullets at fast velocities to shoot at these longer ranges.

I am just wondering how many of you have ever experienced 1500 yards shots. I watch people that do 1000 yards but have never tried. I know I have a hard time finding places I can shoot 500 yards. I know there are people that do shoot far like One Shot, but I didn't realize I was one of the only people that only shoot short distances. I need to get on the ball.
Prairie Boy, I suggest going to www.accuratereloading.com and check out their benchrest section. These guys do shoot that far on a regular basis. Also might want to check out xtremeaccuracy.com. I had this idea once and they explained what is involved for me to do this. Well, I settled for shorter distances.

Prairie Boy, jump over to longrangehunting.com and talk to Ian, Darryl Cassel or Dave King. These guys have tons of knowledge and EXPERIENCE at long range shooting. A few of them are 1000yrd benchrest shooters, and teach long range shooting.

thanks for all the feedback guys. the 338LM sounds like the way to go but i'm not sure the extra cost in brass is worth it. there is virtually no difference between a 338 ultra and a 338 lapua but brass costs like 3 times as much. if u can get 3 times as many reloads out of the brass then that's not a problem. but if it's that expensive just because it's european then it is a problem. another thing that came to mind today was using 300 ultra mag brass and resizing it to hold 338 bullets. that should actually beat the 338LM for capacity since the 338 ultra has a slightly shorter case then the 300 ultra mag.

I think your headed in the right direction Prairie Boy. Looks like you've already did some research into the subject. Theres some work being done with the 300-.338 ultra but I haven't seen to much info on the results yet. I personaly went with the .338 ultra, 28' Krieger barrel on a blueprinted Rem action. Haven't had a chance to let her "reach out and touch" yet. Looks good out to 400yrds. Good Luck!
