Hey guys, I just had a random thought, would it be bad for my barrel to shoot .308 tracers? I was worrried that they might burn up the barrel or something.

The tracer bullets themselves will not hurt your barrel. The thing to watch out for is semi corrosive ammo. Contrary to popular myth, corrosive ammo is actually that way because of the primer itself being corrosive-not the powder.

YG- Eelde is right in that they do make cleaning a barrel much more important and much harder if lots of tracers rounds are fired between cleanings. I have never known of a tracer round to be the cause of burning up a barrel but don't try to shoot 1,000 rounds in a minute or two either.
MD- Hog is right. The will start a fire if the land in something dry enough quicker than you can say 'oh sh**!' I say about 6 dozen fires started from tracers during my tenure in the military.

Most ranges you will go to ban the use of any tracer ammo. Fires is the exact reason why. The range I shoot at over the past few years has had several fires do to the tracer rounds. Members were sent home and told never to come back. The range was also billed by the FD for cost of extinguishing the fire.
