Default Help cleaning a Remington 742

Need some tips on cleaning the Remington 742. This was my dad's rifle and has been passed to me since his passing a few years ago. I have loosened the forearm screw and slid the forearm forward just a little bit. Things looked kind of dry in there. After I clean it real good I may take it on a few hunts and take a deer with it or it may become a "safe queen." Any tips or suggestions would be appreciated.

Ridge is right.
You may have to use a brass punch and hammer to get the barrel nut loose. Also, grinding down the sides of an open end wrench(don't remember size)to fit between the op rod's/railshelps
