Pac-Nor Barrels
#1
Does anybody have one? How are they?
I'm pretty sure I will be getting a Remington 700 30-06 from by brother in law (gonna trade him fora .22). I was going to build a .243 from a short action, but now with the long action I think I am going to do a 6mm-06 Ackley. Pac-Nor chambers for it and they also do fluting, so thats why I'm looking at them instead of Lilja, Hart, Krieger, etc...
Thanks

The 6mm-284 is a better hot rod 6MM than the 6mm-06. And it works great in the Remington long action. Any of the barrels mentioned are very good tubes and have the potential to deliver great accuracy. But every one of them is its own little deal and you never really know what a given barrel is going to shoot or not shoot. If you go with a 9" twist, you can shoot the 105 Hornady A-Max - which is a great long range bullet for targets and medium big game - if your gun likes them. 70 gr. Ballistic Tips or Blitzkings are great varmint pills. I have also had several with a 10" twist and they shoot bullets from 55 gr. to 100 gr. well.

Thanks Roskoe, I didn't know if the 6mm-284 would work or not. How about the bolt face, will that need modified? It seems the 6-284 is also more popular, so that would probably be the better round. I think I am going to have Weaver Rifles do the work, they supposedly do a lot of wildcat chamberings.
Thanks

From avelocity standpoint, the two calibers are about the same. But the 6MM-284 holds a number of long range accuracy records - including a fairly recent 1,000 yard record that may never be beaten. You don't see the 6MM-06 used for this application. But one certainly has the potential to be a useful hunting rifle. I also like the shorter, fatter powder column in the 6MM-284 case design. Better mousetrap.
