.308 is a common diameter to both the 308 and 30'06 calibers. The difference in the 308 is shorted case (less pwder and energy) but has a good accuracy since shorter the case less variability down range - which under 300 yards you will not see a huge difference.
30'06 is the gun to start with and has the larger choices in rounds to choose from.

oh by the way the 7mm mag doesent kick bad like everyone says it is a verry nice gun to shoot i can put 100 rounds through mine ant my sholder isent sore the next day. but if it is too mutch for you it could be the gun um reaload thats what my granpa does. i have 2 7mm mags and they both are the same when it comes to recoin i like em both i have a parkerhale 1200 superclip magnum and a remington 700 bdl

7MM, congrats on the most annoying handle ever created. Anyway, the .308 is capable of taking any game in NA with the right bullet, however, I'd prefer a .338 Win Mag, or larger for the big bears.
