.308 is a common diameter to both the 308 and 30'06 calibers. The difference in the 308 is shorted case (less pwder and energy) but has a good accuracy since shorter the case less variability down range - which under 300 yards you will not see a huge difference.

30'06 is the gun to start with and has the larger choices in rounds to choose from.
