The .280 Rem fires a .284" projectile (7mm) from a .30-06 sized case. The .284 Winchester fired an identical projectile from a .308 Win parent case.

The .260 Rem fires a .264" bullet from a .308Win based parent case. (presumable, the .264 Win was based on an -06 case.

The .264 Win Mag cartridge does fire a .264 projectile but it sends it from a .338 Win Mag case (or .458 Win for that matter) necked down. A lot more capacity than the 30/06. And it does eat up barrels when shooting middle to upper end loads.

Uh.. guys, it's like this. The 284 Winchester cartridge uses a .284" bullet just like the 280 Remington and all the other various 7mm's.The 284 Winchester uses a case all it's own, shorter than the 280 but fatter and with nearly identical powder capacity, with a case diameter slightly larger than the .473" base, which is the same base size as the 30-06,280,270 etc.The 308 case with a .284" bullet is known as the 7mm-08.The 264 Winchester is not an '06 case, it is a belted magnum case.It is easiest to describe as a 7mm Remington Magnum necked down to .264",or 6.5mm.But,the 264 came first being introduced by Winchester in 1958 and Remington necked it up to .284" and called it the 7mm Remington Magnum in 1962.Grab a reloading book someday and checkout the descriptions and drawings of various cartridges.Lots to learn there.

riflenut,
zzzactly. The fact that Remington chose to basically "borrow" the dimensions from the .264 Win Mag just proves that they believed that the choice to use the .458 case was a sound one. Remington did choose to use a little less taper in it's case though.

On top of that, one of the most popular wildcats still around is a varmit round called the 6mm/.284. When I was having my custom 6mm Rem built I spend many sleepless nights debating whether or not to go with the Rem or 6mm/.284. I finally decided that 200 ft/sec wasn't worth having to use obsolete brass and specialty dies. The way my 6mm Rem shoots I have no regrets.

While we're discussing the .264 Win Mag and the 7mm Rem Mag does anybody know some of the other cartridges that were "fathered" by the .458 Win case. My loading books all mention a 'family of cartridges' that came from the .458/.338 case......what are the others????

Riflenut hit the nail on the head. The .284 Winchester is a unique and excellent round in it's own right, with a rebated head and short fat body. The powder capacity of the case and ballistics are vertually indentical to the .280 Rem. But it is not a .280 Remington. The .284 Win. was designed for the M-88 (lever action) and M-100 (semi-auto) Winchester rifles, from about 1958 to about 1972. This round never became very popular because it was only offerd in this 2 rifles. If it had been offered in the M-70 bolt action, it may have enjoyed more popularity. Now days, when people think of the .284 Win case, they think of "what by .284", like 6mmx.284, .25x.284, or .338x.284. The 6.5mmx.284 is gaining popularity in the 1,000yd shooting clan, becuase of it's excellent ballistics and amazing inherent accuracy.

The .264 Winchester Mag., was toted as the fastest and flattest thing around when it was first introduced back in the mid-late 1950's. But, Winchester had the wrong twist (going off of memory here so I hope I get this right) in the barrel, as it was to fast of a twist and quickly gained a bad reputation as a non-shooter with lighter weight bullets. By the time Winchester corrected this with a slightly slower twist rate in the barrel, the damage had already been done, and the .264 Win Mag. never recovered from it's undeserved bad reputation. Then Remington came out with basically an indentical case just necked up to 7mm (.284), called the 7mm Remington Mag, and the .264 Win. Mag's fate was sealed.

The 458 Win,338 Win,264 Win,7mm Rem Mag and the 308 Norma Mag all use brass of about 2.50" long. Also the 257,270 and 7mm Weatherbys use brass of very similiar length with the typical Weatherby radiused shoulders.
