RE: 35 Whelen
From Sierra'
338 Win Mag. 250 grain bullet 4033 ME. 2700 FPS 33.1 lb recoil. 35 Whelen 225 grain bullet 3375 ME 2700 fps 22.6 lb recoil. The 35 Whelen may not be a 338 Win Mag but for all NA game, it stacks up pretty well with 2/3 of the recoil. For a cartridge that came out in the early 1920's and used the plentiful 30-06 surplus brass, its doing well. Talk about tried and true.;) |
RE: 35 Whelen
225 grains @ 2600 MV = 3374 ft-lb of mojo.... my "standard" hunting load... why? because it is deadly accurate from my tube... and the recoil is in all honesty pretty "ho hum"... i have loaded it up to just shy of 2900 fps (2890 average) before REALLY excessive pressure signs begin to develop in the ole 700 (bolt gets a bit "stiffer" to lift eh)... gee wiz that's onlllly 4198 ft-lb of Mr. Newton authority... all from a ho hum 35 whelen AI...
personally... the ONLY negative thing i have to say about the 35's, of any flavour, is that there is a lack of bullets in varying weights and types these days... when compared to 308 and 338 caliber rounds... and if you don't handload, factory ammo can be difficult to find... but the 338-06 is more difficult to find... the ole 35. it'll kill a deer as dead as any other round out there.... without issue... been there, done that... and she killed just as well as my 270, 280, 25-06 and 30-06 rounds have in the past... but to my surprise, over and over, without excessive tissue damage ruining meat from a big ole bruise or blood clot under the hide... basically telling me that it is a bit "too heavy" for a deer and would perform to it's full potential better on larger than deer game... so honestly... on a std long action, '06 size bolt face... NEVER underestimate this round... or the 338-06 for that matter... they are neck and neck performance-wise... but the ole 35 tosses the bigger pills with a bit more finesse and authority... but then again... i shoot coyote with a 280 rem spitting 100 grain hornadys at nearly 3500 fps... being over-gunned is a pleasure :) |
RE: 35 Whelen
The 50 BMG was designed as an anti material weapon. Meaning we have to aim at thier weapons or packs, instead of thier heads. So, can we really count it? I love all the cartridges that the 06' gave birth to. The only one i have not owned is a wildcat 6.5-06. The Whelen was built to kill big game like Elk and moose, using a 300gr bullet. Most factory barrels have the wrong twist to stabilize any thing larger than 250gr. Still, she packs a whallop. It will kill anything you desire to put an end to. I am not saying it is the perfect choice for walking into a thicket after a gut shot Grizzly. I wouldn't clamer for that honor, if i had a belt fed full auto 700 N.E. But, if you have asolidrest at reasonable range it will do the job. It has a stout little thump but it doesn't hurt like the magnums.

konaBoy, who made the rifle you are holding? I like the looks of it. I would like it better with some express style sights and a barrel band sling swivel, but still a real nice weapon.

ORIGINAL: TerryM I wonder how you can have experience with that rifle/cartridge combo since its quite new? You really smoked yourself, heck, it's actually quite funny. |
RE: 35 Whelen
Ellwood Epps (in Ontario)made the rifle off a Mauser action for my great grandpa. I'm about due for another "stop-in" there myself... DM |

RE: 35 Whelen
He just amazes me , duckbutter I read his post and I just laugh. There is almost nothing he hasnt shot or owned. Just as this post goes his comment most of the stuff i say is right and the other is wrong What the hell is he saying. I dont know if you read the one about bullet seating depth, he said it made no differnce then when others posted how it worked and originator thanked them for there help --and said glad he could help ??? help with what. I posted a pic of me with my deer and he made a wise comment like a zebra with an over bite then edited it in about 20 min. then he wonders why I am on his case so much. Every time someone questions his post he acts like a 6th grade girl who just got felt up for the first time. If he would post some valuable info it would be different but what do I know I am just a back woods redneck from Mo. or so he says. |
RE: 35 Whelen
