Default Best Rabbit Gun?

I was just wondering what a good gun would be for some jack rabbits. Friend just mentioned that we should do that this winter.
I would spend a fare amount of money on it, since I like having guns

I only got to shoot Jack Rabbit's a few times. I hunted with a 9422-and I sure had a good time. We shot a bunch of them. I stil can not believe how many rabbits are out there. Tom.

Are you gonna skin and eat 'em? If so then I would think a good .22 would be the ticket. I can't comment on the .17's because I don't have one. I've heard that they are too much for squirrels, but in your situation I would think the .17's would do just fine with head shots and give you more range. Now, if you aren't gonna skin and eat 'em then just about any varmint round would do. I don't have a varmint rifle, but if I was in the market I'd give the .204 Ruger a serious look.

My 22 Mag was always good for jacks. The 'best' rifle choice really depends on how close you can get to them.

The 22 Magnum works good for South Dakota rabbits or Texas whitetails.. Right Rammer?

This should get the job done quite nice.

I would think the 22mag would be the perfect setup for a dedicated jackrabbit gun. If money's of no concern look at Kimber rifles. I believe they make a 22mag, I know they make a 22LR (which would be plenty of gun also). I'm not a fan of the 17s but I suppose this may be their niche. They are too much more squirrels IMHO. Not enough for yotes. This leaves large rabbits, raccoons (for my area). You never take more than a 20 yard shot at coons, you have all night to take it and a thousand trees to rest your gun up against so the "flatness" of the 17s is completely unneeded there. Soooo...yeah, 22mag would be my pick with the 17HMR a distant second right in front of the good ole 22LR.

I used a 12 guage the other day. Worked nicely. If you use a 12 guage for jacks, use the full choke. EJ
