I own several different calibers, and some are ballistically close to each other, but if I had to pic only one it would be the .308.

Some of these posts are amazing! We should all put as much effort into saving our gun ownership and hunting rights as we do defending our caliber beliefs!!!! Then those tree hugging liberals wouldtake a step back:)
My favorite is my BLR 81 .358 Win hence the name. Used on 75% of my hunts(NY &PA).Truly, my shots rarely go over 125 yds in these two states. The .358puts the smack on deer and bears and has turned a coyote inside out!
The .35 Whelen was my other baby. This old girl could group @1" with 56 grains of 4064 and a 200grain Rem PSP, nickle brass, Rem91/2 primer.
The biggest bear was a 330lb blackie with the Whelen. A 50 yard shot that stood the bear straight up on impact, threw it to the left and then he hit the ground with a plop and never twitched a bit after. Impressive to watch!Broke both shoulders and had a monster exit hole. Deer died before they hit the ground with the Whelen. Love those .35's
Mylong range goin' to Montana gun is a.300 WSM. I'm getting comfortable with this gun. Shoots plenty accurate and does a right mean job on those deer and antelope.

Now that's an interesting combo~! I shoot a 6.5x55 or a .308 for deer depending on whether I'm in the bush ora field. Recently I have been thinking about the 35Whelan although I really don't need another gun or caliber. One concern I have read about is potential headspacing issues as a result of the shallow shoulder. Have you ever run into this? I'd like to hear your opinion on this round. What have you used it for etc...

Never have I had a head spacing problem with my Rem 700 Classic .35 Whelen. I put a couple hundred rounds throught it and 90% of those were my handloads. Only factory ammo I tried to work with was Remington's 250 grainer. Ok to shoot, but handloading the 250 works better for accuracy. This caliber is very accurate even when pushing max or near max loads to test out a load. I've shown pressure signs on the spent shell and yet had decent accuracy! I've never owned a .35 Whelen in another rifle, so I can't judgebeyond my Rem.
The new Remington CDL in .35 Whelen is very nice! The gun shop where I go to waste time( and buy more then I should) just got one in. It looks nice and seems to be built well. A step up from the BDL in my opinion. Wood is nicer and wood to metal fit was very good. Is she a shooter? Who knows. But I believe that if you buy a .35 Whelen and are a handloader, you'll have years of great hunting and shooting pleasure with it. It won't ever let you down as long as you do your part with the gun!!! Good luck in your search.

I would either have to go with my 7mm Rem Mag or 30-06. Actually, I haven't tried the 300WSM yet, I might do so when I visit the range next time around. I wonder if all of the hype surrounding it is true? If so, I may have to trade in my Ruger and Remington foran A-Bolt.
