I was given thatrifle in that caliber when I was 11, and shot my 1st whitetail (a 10 pointer!) with it the next Fall. I think I took 4 or 5 deer with it, all told.
I never shot it much outside of deer season, and hadn't shot it at all since I left for college. 20 years later, I got it out, & it prints some awfully nice groups. I had hunted with 100 grain Cor-Lokts, but it really seems to like the 80 grain Power-Lokt bullets. It's got less than 150 rounds through it in all these years, so I really can't speak to its longevity.
I've since acquired a 700 CDL that feels infinitely better in my hands, but that 788 was probably a great choice for a young boy.

I have one that's been on the farm for many years and it's harvested a lot of deer. Dad used it year around for a pest and everything else gun, and it still shoots today as it always has.... and that's excelent!
It's too bad that Rem. quit makeing them!

I had quite a few of them as they were available in LH as well. I had a 243, a LH 6MM Rem and a couple 308's. The bolt handle came off of one of the 308's. Good rifles.

I bought one for my kids to hut deer and pronghorn with. They have and so have I. It is a very peasent rifle to shoot and shoots well.

But I think it will become a coyote gun for me. And I'll get the kids something else like a 7mm08. The .243 will kill game. But I don't like the way it does. No blood trail to speak of or none at all. I lost a big buck partly because of this and could have lost a couple deer if not for good circumstances.

I personally never owned one, but I do keep some track of current gun values, and the 788 is doing nothing but going up in value at a nice rate. If nothing else, it's something you probably will not lose money on. Also, from what I have heard in the past, and what has been stated here so far, they seem to be decent shooters, for the most part.
