Marlin .30-.30 with or without scope
Just purchased a marlin 336w and currently doesn't have a scope. I planned to use it mainly in the heavy woods. However, sometimes i could really use a scope so i don't limit my shots.
I purchased some weaver rings (see thru type) and have yet to get a scope.
what i am wondering is, does anyone recommend a scope for this gun and being that the rings are the see-thru style, how accurate will a scope be? The scope will be sitting high probably requiring quite and adjustment maybe outside the adjustment range.
Sell me on scoping this gun or not.

Semi, I too recently purchased a 336 with see-thru scope mounts and have yet to receive my scope. I got a 3x-9x-40 scope even though I don't need that much power. Hope fully it will be nice and accurate.

If you do scope it stay as low power and light weight as you can. A 2-7x is plenty, or fixed 4x would be more than enough magnification as well. Also, with those see-through rings you might want to slap a spair scope on there just to see if you can even look through it. I find that I have to bring my face nearly completely off the comb in order to shoot through my 10/22's scope with see-throught rings. Might have to decide between open sights or scope, and no "in-between"

It is all a matter of personal preference. I originally had an old Glenfield fixed 4x32 scoped on my Marlin 30AS, but it broke and lost its "zero", so I took it off. Now I just use the plain open sights and have gotten used to them. It's a lot quicker, snappier, and easier handling, IMHO.

Here's how my Marlin 30-30 looked with the 4x32 scope on a low Weaver base.
Here's how my Marlin 30AS 30-30 looks now (kind of "plain jane" but I like it)

I recently picked up a 336W and have ordered aWilliams peep sight. They're relatively low cost and don't add the weight or bulk of a scope. All my bolt action rifles have scopes on 'em, I thought I'd try the peep sight on this one.

Oh Lord, see thru mounts. A great idea for sure, but it should have stopped there.
See thru mounts put you in a terrible shooting position, and lets face it here, if you have a scope you are never going to use the iron sights. Why would you??? Get a good 1-4 or 2-7 power if you want a scope. If you don't want a scope, then put on some good iron sights (Williams peep) and have at.
You can have your cake and eat it too, but I wouldn't do it. Pick one, it ain't Burger King, you can't have it your way....[:'(]

I also use the M-8 Leupold on this type of rifle. Next choice would be a good 2x7 which is a favorite of mine. The Nikon Pro-Staff 2x7 comes to mind.
