if i was going to do a few boxes a year and just deer hunt with it a 7mm-08 or a .308 would be my choice.
but if you aree like me and you like to shoot then the .308 i feel is the way to go because of the cheap milsurp ammo

Lots of good feedback. While I'm new to this, I have to agree with it. I picked up a 270WSM recently. Decided on that as I wanted something that I could use for various small to mid-size game. Went with the short magnum as I'm uncertain of the kind of distances I'll eventually be shooting. So far, the ammo availability and price on the short magnums could be better.
If I find that I'm doing a lot of shooting under 200 yards I'll probably take a 7mm-08 or 30-06. No need to punish my shoulder or pocketbook for short yardage.
