7mm Mag
Hey guyz,
I have put up some post on a 300. Ular Mag and a 300.WSM.
But i think i have finally made up my mind on what caliber of gun i am going to get.
I am going to get a 7mm mag for DEER Hunting.
The shots i will probally will be takin wil be 100 yards and under.
What kind of bullet from a 7mm mag will hold together really good and not really expand that much at a 50 yard shot.
Do yall think i am stupid for geting this gun for Deer Hunting??
Will this gun be a good gun for Deer Hunting under 100 yards shot.
Thanks For the Help.
Travis H.

RE: 7mm Mag
It will be fine for 100 yards and under, but you sure will be burning alot of powder to accomplish what other cartridges might do more efficiently. The 7mm Rem Mag shines at longer ranges, but is still effective at short. You might want to look into a 7mm-08 Rem or a 270 Win for deer. Both are ballistically exceptional and have less recoil, less muzzle blast and will be a little cheaper to shoot. If you really have your heart set on a 7mm Rem Mag then go for it, but you might want to look at a few more options since you said you are just hunting deer.

RE: 7mm Mag
i have a 7mm rem mag myself and i love it but if your buying a gun just for deer hunting and your shots will be under 100 yards i don't think it's your best choice. there are many other calibers that would be a wiser choice for the situation your hunting in.
243, 260, 7mm-08 will all work wonderfully. the 260 and 7mm-08 are about as perfect as u can get for a straight deer gun. u could also get a 6.5x55 or even a 30-30 or a ton of other calibers but for short shots like that i don't think u need a 7mm mag. it'll work just fine sure, but it wouldn't be my first choice if i where hunting where u are.
cheers

RE: 7mm Mag
Ive owned several 7 mags over the years, and I just never did fall in love with the cartridge for deer hunting. Most of my deer shooting is at short ranges and I actually liked the 7x57 better because it wasnt so loud and didnt burn so much powder for what seemed to me to be a very marginal gain in usefulness as a deer blaster. If you dont mind all the racket its a fine deer killer though. I have often thought of revisiting the 7 mag with 140 grain x bullets. That would make a good deer rifle I think. I have a good shooting 280 right now that has a 26" barrel and I am getting about the same velocities I got from the 24" 7 mag I last had though, so I doubt if the 7mag fever will sweep me over at this late stage of the game. 7 mag is a fine cartridge though.
