Yes!!!!!!!!!!! You are!! Hey guys we found the last remaining 30-30 shooter alive on the planet! How long has it been 20-30 years since they have commercially made ammo for it?? :D Didnt you get the memo that all of us hunters have all switched over to the brand new 30-06 round? They just brought it out this year, thats why its called the 30 (caliber) 06 (the year they brought it out 2006) ;)

Airsoft Dude,

You ain't the only one to hunt with a 30-30! I love mine and won't part with it. I have a Marlin 30AS with plain iron sights on it and it does the job. Readwhat I got with my Marlin 30-30a few days ago!

http://www.huntingnet.com/forum/tm.aspx?m=1815250

Okay, it wasn't a big deer, but still - a 75 yard shot with open sights in the brush. Ya gotta love the quick handling of the 30-30. [8D]:D

Haven't you been reading the internet? 30-30s can no longer kill deer. You need some kind of mag, short mag, super short mag, or ultra mag now.

RE: 30-30 owners

There is this new Hornady ammo LeverEv-something that will kill deer deader that the old stuff used to. If you don't believe me, ask the 3 deer that I have shot with my Marlin 336T. Here is one that I shot a couple of weeks ago. He looks deader to me.

30-30, it is not my choice, but there are many being used! Within its limitations, it is a great choice!

I really don't think he could fake that much blood loss.LOL!
One myth that I have been able dispel is that rubber tipped bullets bounce off game. The LeverEvs DO penetrate skin on both sides of a deer.

I have a safe full of guns in various calibers from 243 to 375 H&H and many in between, and I CHOOSE to hunt with a 30-30. I hunt in east Texas pineywoods where most of my shots are under 75 yards. It is the perfect caliber for me and my situation.

I have a safe full of guns in various calibers from 223 to50 BMGand many in between, and I CHOOSE to hunt with practically anything but a 30-30. Out here in the wide open plains and high alpine mountains and for the game I pursue I want something with more reach and more thump. That said, I'm sure it does an acceptable job on Southern Whitetail.

Hey retrieverman, there is one thing about your 30-30... You cheat by having a scope on yours! (just messin' with ya!) The new LeverEvolution rounds on a scoped 30-30 must really be a blast to shoot! I need to try a box of them...

I own 2 30-30's (Win Mod94 & Marlin 336c). I don't hunt with either of these but my wife does you the Marlin and she loves it. It seems to fit her well and has very little kick. There is a 4X scope on it and I have it 2 inches high at 100yrds so she is good to go out to 150yrds....

I only use the 30-30 here in those old cuttings with saplings growing every where. For me it is the number one choice, as I have seen a lot of high power rifles miss after nicking a hardwood sapling or just wounding and leaving a hard time to find it. Mine is also a marlin and would never part with it. Over the years a quite a few deer has been shot with it.

You are certainly NOT the only person who uses a .30/30. But most people who are able to, use something else!

After going through .270, 30-06, muzzleloaders, slug guns, and various milsurp... I've finally graduated to 30-30. I've been itching for 30-30 for a while; I got a Marlin 336 this week, trading a pistol for it. After mounting my old Bushnell Tropy 1.5-4x32mm that I removed from muzzleloader, I took it to the range yesterday. My impression... I found it the Marlin w/30-30 to be a sweet-shooting, accurate arm. I first boresighted - two shots onto paper at 25, adjust - three at fifty, adjust - then a few minutes later moved to a hundred, fired four-shot group, it was in a <2" circle, I kid you not. I was jazzed. Adjusted again... but never got better than 3-4 inches after that; apparently a warm barrel makes a difference, or maybe the 2" was a fluke? Hey, it would have been a smidge over 1" if I disregarded the one flyer. This Marlin 336 is an excellent rifle; soon as I get over this cold, I'm taking it hunting. I wish I'd gotten one of these twenty years ago, instead of starting out with a 30-06.

Virtues: short, handy, easy to carry one-handed (slim receiver), mild-shooting (I'm a recoil wussy accustomed to using a muzzleloader or slug gun) and apparently accurate. I look forward to taking first deer with it.

Here's the New Kid:

Even though it is not really enough gun to kill a deer, I managed to down another doe about an hour ago with my Marlin 336T 30-30. I realize one of my 300 WSMs would have been better suited for the 50 yard shot, but I was wanting a challenge. Marlin 336T-4 Deer-0

RE: 30-30 owners

Now this has been a fun thread to read. I think that after 100 years of successful deer hunting the 30/30 is probably the most underrated rifle in the books. Geez, it was developed for deer (at least htat is what I have read) and has been around for more than 100 years, nuff said. So it only has an efficient range of 150 yards or so, big deal, most deer that are killed by a 30/30 are from 100 yards or less. I am not sure where all of the negetive stigma came from a 30/30 but most of it is just people down playing it to justify the $700+ expense of a new big bore rifle to thier wives. It is not an ideal rifle for big game like Elk or Moose, but at the right distance it will even do that too, just not as well as a more modern cartridge does. Oh, and did I mention that a 30/30 is only about half as expensive to shoot as a Magnum in about any caliber is? So therefore you can afford to practice a lot more and be an even better shot with your 30/30 which is really what counts when hunting.

That is what its all about buddy. Congrats on your deer and on owning a fine rifle. A person doesnt have to be using a cannon to be able to kill deer. The 30/30 is a perfect weapon to hunt with. Fun to shoot too.

No your not the only one. I just purchased a Marlin 336w this past friday. I use it on deer drives where we are walking thru lots of brush. I also use it anytime i am sitting in the heavy stuff. I figure i am not going to find a deer in my scope if i walk up on it and it takes off.

I used a 7mm-08 and 30.06 scoped for the longer range stuff or sitting in my stand. But the 30-30 is a great woods gun. Got a deer yesterday with the 30-30, right thru the heart at 90 yards (iron sites). I love how compact and low recoil this gun is. its a pleasure to shoot.

I have owned a Marlin 336C in 30/30 for over 20 years. My father gave it to me after he picked it up in a trade. The gun was rough when he got it but I cleaned it up and put a cheap scope on it and a sling. The gun has always shot real well,1.5 at 100yds.I have never killed a deer with it,but that might change next year because Im thinking of going hunting in PA and might use this gun.

Went hunting with the new-to-me 336 30/30 this afternoon. Saw doe; I watched her for about ten minutes, deciding on whether to shoot... decided not to... then she took off. Kind of wish I'd popped her for the freezer, since this property is about to be developed (already surveyed, damn it). But I'm limited out for does... oh well.

Probably better that you wait then. No reason to be getting your 30/30 taken from you just because you want a few extra vinesin steaks to hold you through winter lol.

To quote my friend and fellow Shootist Mic McPherson, who by the way is a genuine, credentialed, and well-published ballistics expert: "Those who cannot cleanly dispatch their game using a .30-30 are either shooting too far, hunting inappropriate (too large) game, or are simply incompetent." I think that he summed it up rather well.
