Hope I am not breaking any rules by posting another website, but you might want to try
rimfirecentral.com
also.
It doesn't sound like a horrible deal to me, but I am not sure. One thing I am pretty sure of, that thing will shoot!!!!!

I don't think you got screwed at all. The gun alone probably goes for close to 200, then add the scope, maybe 100 bucks depending on what model you got. I'd say you did about right on it. Sure you probably could have got it cheaper somewhere, but I doubt much. And if you got it at a gun store the slightly higher price you paid will be worth the extra service you will get in the end.
I have the same gun minus the accutrigger and it's wood instead of synthetic. I paid 200 bucks for the gun, 40 something for the rings and 400 for the scope. So I think you did pretty well. Got mine at cabela's by the way a few years ago.

I'll have to agree with your friends. A few months ago I bought a Savage 17, heavy barrel. The damned barrel was misaligned so badly that It wouldn't zero. I tried 2 different scopes and mounts and the closest I got the groups to zero was 3 inches from center. It grouped well though. Finally I took the scope off, looked at the rifle and could see right off that the barrel was misaligned.
I knew Savage made garbage when I bought it so I got what I asked for.

Sorry, took it back, they shot it, agreed & shipped it back to the "Little Bus Factory".
I won't be buying anymore Savage garbage, but you're welcome to what ever else is in the can.

I don't believe his friends said he purchased a bad rifle, just that he paid too much money for it is all. At least that is what I got out of it.
You purchased one gun out of 10's of thousands and it was deffective, what a shock from a mass produced low priced item. I supose because you got one bad one they are all crap. Just don't tell the thousands of happy customers about it and ruin thier dreams. I don't know of a gun maker around that hasn't put out a bad gun or two, or hundred.
Mine shoots great as does any one else I know of that owns one. And it's my third savage I have owned. Never had a problem with any of them. Where as I have had three remingtons that were not that hot. I guess that means remington makes bad guns? How do they stay in business I wonder?
In the five years I have been visiting shooting related web sites you are only the second person I have seen have a serious problem with a savage 17HMR. That seems like a pretty good track record to me.
Just my opinion anyway.
