i found 3-4 places that had it for just over $500 but dicks sporting goods has one left in the 30 06 so i told them to hold it for me. its on clerance for $439.97

I would check the pawn shops in your area and try to find a 30.06 in good condition that you like. You are likely to find one with a great scope and a nice wood stock for under $400. I just picked up a Winchester .270 that looks like new and works great for $329 + tax. Look around, you might be surprised.
