This may be a dumb question but I need a little help. I have got a new stainless Tikka T3 270WSM. I want to take it to the range this week for the first time. After reading some info on barrel break-in procedures, I am a little worried that I may not have all the right supplies. I want to get the most accuraccy I can out of it. I have a bronze brush, patch loop, Hoppes #9 powder solvent, copper remover (birchwood-Casey Bore Scrubber), and a good quality cleaning rod. I know I need a bore guide also. My two questions are, do I need a jag to remove the coper fouling and will the Bore Scrubber(smells strong ammonia) harm the stainless barrel? I have heard that ammonia will damage stainless barrels. What do you guys use?

I use barnes cr-10 and sweets 7.62 to remove copper.Both are more aggressive than the birchwood casey product,and neither has caused any damage to any of my barrels.

What about a jag? Do you use one or just a brush?

Well you do need a jag to remove the fouling.I use a proper sized bronze jag and cotton patches.Be aware that any good copper solvent will eat a bronze brush,so rinse it with waterimmediately after use.

Ammonia can damage a barrel if left for extended periods but if you run a few dry patchs then followa saturated patch with light gun oil you'll be good. I use a for caliber jag and bore brush(when required). Stoney point bore guide and dewey coated 1 piece rod.

Forgot to mention if/when planning on firing/using the rifle make sure to run a dry patch down the bore to remove any excess oil.

Do I need a bore guide?

Best if you do. Keeps everything in line when passing the rod thought the chamber. The bore guide also has a small slot on top of the tube for applying cleaning solution to prevent from making a mess. Well worth the small investment. Just make sure you get the correct one...

Here's what you need:

1. proper sized bronze brush
2. proper sized Jag
3. proper sized cotton patches
4. Gunslick foaming bore cleaner
5. Hoppe's


Now Brush out powder with hoppes. Push a couple of patches through. Spray foamer in. Let sit 15 minutes. Patch out bore (may take several patches).Run one patch with hoppes. Run two clean patches. Run a patch with oil on it through. Done!

I've heard good things about Wipeout. Though when I tried Gunslick foamer I never saw the need to try anything else. I used to clean for hours with Sweets, Montana extreme, Butch's bore shine.... Not anymore. I've even tested my bores after the foamer with Sweet's expecting to find copper residue left over.....Nothing. I love the stuff!
