Default .243 or 6 mm rem

I am looking to get avarmint rifle and was wondering this simple question. Is there any (dis)advantage to either cartridge? I know that the 243 win is a more prevalent and popular round, but the 6mm rem seems to just be an answer and competition in the bore market.

Also, I don’t want a 22 cal because, other then my rim fires, I want to be able to use all my guns for deer. The 22-250'sand 223's don’t appeal to me. Thanks in advance!

Other than the distinct lack of factory offerings for the 6mm rem it does outperform the .243 by a slight margin and shoots flatter than the .243 with an equal weight bullet.

The Hornady Light Magnum load for the 6mm Rem is a real gem as well. It blows the .243 Light Magnum loads out of the water.

I'd defintely go with it.

one point to consider, if you're going to shoot a lot of varmints, is that the .243 case design will erode the throat quicker than the 6mm rem. it's not a problem when the target is deer-sized, but when best accuracy is gone in a thousand rounds, and you are trying to bust minute-of-angle critters, it might get frustrating. if you are starting from scratch, and don't mind working up your own loads, i'd go for the 6mm. but rifle's offered in this calibre are limited. even remington only offer it in the VLS - and i don't think you'd want to lug one of those around chasing deer.

If you reload and can get a rifle you like in 6mm I 'd go with it.

Like the others said. I'd go for a 6mm if you reload. If you don't reload go for the 243.

I reload all my centerfire ammo and I use a 243 exclusively for coyote/varmints, and it makes a nice back up deer rifle.

I will be reloading for whatever caliberI decide on. I was really thinking the 6mm was a better cartridge and the rifle I'm looking at (http://www.impactguns.com/store/SS-97493.html) is offered in both. Plus, the caliber says 'remington' if that really means anything. I'll look in to it some more!

Having owned several of each, I liked the 6MM Remington best. You will get 100-150 fps more velocity from the 6MM. However both have plenty of velocity.

There are some 6mm's around if you look hard enough. I'm mainly referring to the "gently used" rack. There are also some older .244's around too, but I believe the rate of twist is different for them. The 6mm round is a great one. Good luck.

There is none in the closet but as far as I know, the dealer in Aberdeen usually has a couple.
