I would buy bushnell before simmons, tasco or bsa.The 3200 elite has proven to be a very good scope for the money and even a banner is serviceable.

Don't go any cheaper than Redfield, Stay away from simmons, trashco, bsa and bushnell. For the money the lower priced redfields like you can get at Wal-Mart are hard to beat, although they have gone up some. When it comes to optics, buy quality now and he won't be regretting it in the long run.

I've found comparably priced Tascos to be as good as most other scopes within their price range. I haven't been impressed with BSA. I believe Redfield is overpriced compared to the quality of the scope. For under $100.00, I'd look at the Bushnell line.

Unless he is just in a complete sweat to get a scope on that rifle, you might check with some gun shops and see if you can find a used Leupold. I have found a few VX II's for about 100 bucks. I have a good shooting buddy who, in a trade, came up with a new BSA scope and nothing on it worked. Mostly I think 100$ scopes are a risky thing that may or may not work for any length of time. Your chances of getting something that will work might be better if you choose a fixed power too. Something like the trashco 4x with the 40 mm bell? good luck.

Drache,
Check out Weaver scopes they are more expensive than Been Screwed Agains, but well worth it.
Why so much magnification for song dogs? 6X is plenty enough power.

If you don't want to buy a Leupold or a Burris I would look into Weaver scopes like Rem.222 said...<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

I think you're better off waiting and save up to get a Leupold VX-I, or VX-II. If you look around, or even check "www.forthehunt.com" web site, you should be able to find a leupold VX-I under $200.00.

I would look at Weavers and Cabelas Pine Ridge scope...I mean the recoil on a 223 isn't going to stress anything not that these brands couldn't take larger calibers easily. If you want just look at www.ebay.com and they have scopes in that price range...you may be able to get a Burris for that price...Leupolds bring higher money...I know I have been trying to buy a few backup scopes this week and you can in some cases pay 80% of the price of anew Leupold. Larry338 gave good advice on getting a fixed power you will pay less for them then you would for the "IN" miniature observatories parading as telescopic sights these days.
