Unless he is just in a complete sweat to get a scope on that rifle, you might check with some gun shops and see if you can find a used Leupold. I have found a few VX II's for about 100 bucks. I have a good shooting buddy who, in a trade, came up with a new BSA scope and nothing on it worked. Mostly I think 100$ scopes are a risky thing that may or may not work for any length of time. Your chances of getting something that will work might be better if you choose a fixed power too. Something like the trashco 4x with the 40 mm bell? good luck.
