Yep. Alot more. Depends on the load but you can expect 30% or more recoil. Going to have to learn to handlt the 300win mag compared to the 308 but not out of the question. Now ifs a RUM, going to kick well over twice that of yoru 308. |

RE: 300 magnum
I have been shooting a Rem model 700 in 300 win mag since 1971. It will kick more than your 308 but my wife has blasted with my 300 and she weighed about 120 pounds then. I use mostly 165 gr handloads but have used 180's. My nephew has a savage 110L that kicks the stuffing out of you, so make sure gun fits!

RE: 300 magnum
I have a 300 win mag in a BLR. I was out sighting in on Sat. 4 shot group inside a 2 inch circle @ 100 yd. This was with a hot barrell. It was an initial sight in and I had used up some Power Points to get a basic zero. Then I started in with Win 180 Accubonds for zero with my hunting ammo.I think it can be tightened up some more.
I won't lie to you, after about a dozen shots my shoulder was telling me it was about time for a rest. This probably explains my grouping. Taken in small doses, I think the 300 would be fine for you, but if you plan on doing a lot of bench shooting, then I don't think the 300 is for you. |
RE: 300 magnum
thanks everyone for the replies. sorry to sound like a noob but whats the difference in all the 300 mag's? i was looking at the remington 700.

RE: 300 magnum
Im order of power, I'd say:
300 wsm and saum 300 win mag 300 ultra, whetherby, h & h. If you're deer hunting, 300 win mag is the most you'd need and you don't even need that. Look at a 270 wsm. Those are nice rifles and won't kick as hard, but they will hit hard. :D |
RE: 300 magnum
I've got a 300 Wby and the first time I shot it my shoulder was black and blue after twelve shots. I'm not a small guy (6'5" 295 lbs), but as I've learned, that doesn't really matter. I've learned to get it tight, real tight to my shoulder and cheek. I can shoot it now without a problem and have shot .25 " three shot groups (center to center) with it (normally .75 "). Will a 300 (any of them) kick more than a 308? You betcha. And in most cases, if you are hunting only deer, it isn't worth it.
