RE: 300 magnum

What is your purpose for the power boost from .308 to a 300 Magnum? Are you planning on hunting somethinglarger than an elk at distances beyond 300 yards? If not, you really don't need the extra power (and noise and recoil and increased potential for developing a flinch) of a 300 Mag.

If you want to review ballistics, both Remington and Winchester have ballistics tables for their ammo on their web pages which will give you an idea about the power levels of the various 300 Mags, as well as comparisons to what you've already got.

ipsc said it all. I hunted with the 300 Win Mag for several years then went back to the 308. Lots more enjoyable to shoot and I have yet to run into a situation where the 308 lacked anything that I needed it to do. Now I don't even use the 308 much as its more than I need for deer. If I go for Moose this fall then the 308 or 6.5 will do the job.

Im looking at buying a 300 magnum but ive never shot one ive just seen what they can do on paper. the biggest gun ive shot b4 this is a 308 so how much harder is the 300 magnum going to kick? i dont want to hesitate b4 i shoot but im fine with the 308 so do uguys think i would have a problem with a 300 magnum ( btw im 17 years old 165 pounds)
I guess were talking about the 300win mag, I've seen first hand wat they have done to mule deer and thats a lot of damage towards meat especially to a deer..
And im 16 (110lbs)cuurrently right now and this up coming weekend on saturday i gotta sight in my dads 300win cuz my dad cuts some of his thumb off at work so he is casted up and to tell you the truth i'm more worried about my new 7rem mag b/c my gun is lighter than my dads gunand his is the feather weight model so basically this depends on the weight of the rifle. i was 14 when i first shot his 300 and i was 95 pounds but the first shot will be the awakining shot after that you'll know what your in for...
Its a great rifle you couldn't go wrond with it..

Good luck!!!

Do something to humor me, and don't be offended. Let someone else load the guns for you 1 cartridge at a time without you looking each time. Have them slip in a fired cartridge caseat some point before you adjust the scope.

I will bet you a cold drink you flinch and see it clearly when the fired cartridge is clicked on. Don't worry, 95 out of 100 people you find will do the same. This is a learning tool for you and not meant to embarrase you. If you truely don'tmoveI will be impressed, If you do move I will be just as impressed thatyou went to the trouble of experimenting to improve yourself.

If you do move consider not adjusting the scope. If you do decide to adjust the scope only do it after 3-shot groups.

Good luck.

I hope nobody here ever developes a shoulder as bad as mine. If you do, you will know why I don't use anything that has more recoil than I need to withstand.;)Take some advise that I didn't follow myself, Take care of your shoulders while you can. If something hurts it and you don't need the pain then pass on it. Later in life you will be glad that you did.

Everybody flinches. It maybe so small you can see it, it maybe so appearant you drop the freakin gun. Its just the way the human body is wired. But the fella has to learn to shoot a decent sized gun sooner or later. I know I was horrible when I got my first 300win.Shoulder black and blue.It litterly took me over 1500 rounds and 5 yearsto start getting my muscle memory and my mind used to doing that. I feel now I can shoot up to a 338win mag without too much a flinch and many a day shoot up to 40 rounds without my shoulder getting sore. The point of it is, you got to learn sooner or later..

I don't understand why people don't do something as simple as using a PAST shoulder pad when shooting from the bench. Why get beat up when you don't have to? You'll shoot much better when you're not worried about your shoulder getting pounded on each shot. I always wear mine when shooting from the bench, even if I'm just shooting the .243.

That is a very smart idea. I hope others will listen.
