id go with a .243

RE: General Purpose Rifle
I'd get a Model 7 in .243 and put a 3x9x33 Leupold VX-II compact scope on it...Light, handy and that smaller scope looks great on a Model 7...
Too bad Remington doesn't have sense enough to offer their Mountain Rifle in .243... |
RE: General Purpose Rifle
Sounds to me like a perfect place for a lever gun --30-30, .44 mag,45/70 maybe even a .45 long colt. All of these can kill deer & hogs at +/- 100 yards with ease.I do like the 25-06 but for your setting I would go lever.

RE: General Purpose Rifle
ORIGINAL: James B I don't recommend the 223 for deer hunting although its legal where I hunt. I took several deer with the Savage over and under in 222. when that was the only rifle I had. It worked well and I never lost a deer with it. I did pick my shots though and kept the shots under 100 yards. That was beffore the premium bullets meant for deer were around. Barnes and Nosler make bullets now made for deer hunting with the 22 Centerfires. I never use them anymore but in a pinch, I know it would work again. How in the Sam H*ll could anyone evr call somebody with 873 guns cheap?? :D:D |
RE: General Purpose Rifle
I about quadruple on the 243.

RE: General Purpose Rifle
The 243 Win. will do all you want....easily.

RE: General Purpose Rifle
My wife wishes that I was super cheap!!!;)
I assume that for deer you would use your 7 Mag. The 223 is a fine varmit rifle between the two you will be well set. |
RE: General Purpose Rifle
Another vote for the .243 here.

RE: General Purpose Rifle
I'll add yet another vote for the .243. The .223 is fun and cheap to shoot, but if you're looking for all purpose the .243 will fill the task a little better. I've been using the Federal 85gr BTHP load for everything in mine, so I don't have to worry about changes in scope zero. I've taken a couple groundhogs and a nice doe with it last fall. The 85gr load shoots somewhat flatter than the 100gr loads, and opens up where it needs to in deer. They also makevarmint loadings in .243, both in 55 and 70gr V-shok loads. I just looked at the Federal website and they've got a new 85gr loading with the Barnes Triple Shock X-Bullet. I haven't seen them in person yet, but given what I've seen out of other Barnes products it should be an awesome bullet for deer, though I'm sure the price is commesurate.

RE: General Purpose Rifle
I'll chime in with another vote for the .243
In a light handy bolt it's quite a wide ranging tool. If you handload it's even better. With bullets available from 70 grains to 105 grains its pretty versatile. |
