yes . I suppose you could kill a coyote with a 22 short, if you really wanted too.

A BB gun will kill coyote, and one of the biggest brown bears ever killed was shotwith a 22lr.... Neither case makes them the right rifle for the job though...

I'd rather have a 22 WMR in my hands for coyotes anyday than the 17HMR, but it doesn't mean the .17 won't kill them.

Will it kill one? Of course it will, should it be called a "coyote rifle", NO.

I don't know that I would perosnally try it, but yes they will. That is what they made the 20 grn XTP rounds for, better penitration on larger game. Asl long as you keep the range in mind and have proper shot placement the 17 will work in my opinion.

I don't even own a centerfire, but if I were to go coyote hunting I think I would take my slug gun or Inline Muzzle loader before my 17, but that's just me. I figure the effective ranges are about the same but the larger guns carry waaaaay more energy at the target.

The 17 HMR is a target plinker IMHO. Will it kill a coyote withina reasonable range. Yeah I guess but it's not a good choice for that purpose. As stated earlier I'd much rather have a 22 mag in my hands for coyotes than a 17 HMR. But my prefered lower end limit for coyotes would be a 22 Hornet.

As far as the .22 mag goes, the 17 will do anything the .22 mag does. What it lacks in bullet weight it makes up for in velocity and better bullet design.

Go to rimfirecentral.com, there are tons of guys killing yotes with them over there, so it can be done without doubt. Just wouldn't be my first choice is all.

I took a yote with mine this spring using the XTP rounds. One shot, 65 yards, right behind the shoulder. It expired very quickly. Normally I would use my 22-250, but this is what was in the truck. If you are picky about your shots, use the XTP rounds, and keep shots under 100 yards you should have no problems.

Any rimfire, even a .22 short, will kill a coyote under ideal conditions. But ideal conditions are seldom encountered in the field. The big question is how many coyotes are you willing to educate? With a rimfire, you will have to pass on a lot of shots, and once that coyote comes in and figures out what's going on, he's not going to come back to that call anytime soon. And he's going to be a little more coming in to the next call. I have to pass on more shots than I'd like to with a .223 and a 25-06. It's not many, but I hate to get a coyote up and not get a shot off. If I had to be picky about my shot placement AND do so within 100 yards, I'd be educating about twice as many coyotes as I was shooting.
