I have a friend that loves his 25-06, but there are places where you are required to have a larger caliber to be legal for elk.
Not doubting your word, but exactly where isthat? Never heard of that!

Might not actually be state law or anything, but I could see a guide or ranch restricting what calibers you use on what game.

I don't know all the game laws for all the states either, heck I don't even think I know all of them for my state!

First of all I must say your a brave man posting your wife's weight on the net!!!!
Mine hunts with a 30-30 and loves it. She shoots really well with it. She likes the fact it is short and seems to fit her well. She has shot my 30-06 but finds the recoil is a bit much.
300savage is also a good size gun if you have access to one.

If Mrs Biscuit wanted to hunt deer I would try to team up with a buddy to try a rifle out first. If she is recoil sensitive, have her shoot from a stand position and she how it goes. My co-worker's wife hunts with a Ruger in .257 Roberts and she always bags her game. Not my first choice for elkies but some use the (eek!) 243.

size has nothing to with it.

You got that right!
I agree though that the 7MM-08 is much more bang, for the ouch!

What's wrong witht the 7mm Rem Mag? My old lady at 110 is shooting one. No brake, just a shoulder mounted recoil pad.

Since you did mention elk....

"....isnt a 7mm-08 a larger gun then a 30-06? Wouldent it kick harder?"
The 30-06 is the stronger cartridge.

"....she's only 120 lbs so she is recoil sesetive...."
Is this coming from her by experience or you by presumption? If she does try shooting some rifles of "more normal elk caliber" like a 30-06 then don't go hyping the "felt recoil" involved in advance. Let her decide what is too much. We had a 14 year old girl at 100 pounds take her elk two years ago with a 30-06 --- she didn't see what the fuss was all about.

OR, better yet,

Buy a nice little deer rifle (243ish)that is easy and fun to plink with to build up her confidence and experience level and use that for the deer hunt. Then when it is time to go elk hunting let her know part of the package is that she is going to have to step up her game to match the quarry. Then buy her an elk rifle. (Match size of the tools to the size of the job.)

"....size has nothing to with it. I am little and can handle more recoil than guys twice my size. I used to have a 30-06 when I weighed 90 lbs. I'm not going to say it didn't throw me around, but I shot it just fine.
"....What's wrong witht the 7mm Rem Mag? My old lady at 110 is shooting one. No brake, just a shoulder mounted recoil pad."
A couple of "counter-presumption" viewpoints, plus your wife has the weight advantage (though that don't matter much --- it is "the size of the fight in the dog, not the size of the dog in the fight" --- she may be more "non-recoil sensitive" than you appear to presume (based on what you've said).

IMO, try the 30-06 (or 30-06 equivalents)and if that isn't going to work then go to lesser if you must. If the next notch down (270, 7mm-08 etc)don't work, then maybe elk hunting isn't such a good idea, may just want to stick with deer and pick up a comfy deer rifle. I could get into weight of rifle, fit, weight and type ofbullet and size of load, technique, (brakes), etc, etc. but probably best to keep this one simple.

The rifle itself has a lot to do with it. I have a Parker-Hale 7mm mag that kicks less than my brother's synthetic stock 270. If you get her a good rifle in the 270 or 7mm-08 she should be able to handle it.

Something else to think about, you know she won't feelmuch of the recoilwhen she's shooting at an animal anyway, so maybe you could get her a "lead sled" as I call them, something that takes the recoil when she's practicing and sighting in and she will be able to handle an 06 or 7mm, or more "traditional" elk calibers.

JMO!!

I must admit though, I am jealous! I wish I could get my wife to pick up a rifle, let alone try to shoot an elk!! You're a lucky man!!
