I wonder how many years of life he took off that barrel? I would be sure somebody like that would just keep pulling the trigger......melting barrel be damned.

The cheapest and most accurate boresighter in the world is a sharpy.haha.

Take a sharpy and make a 1/4 dot on a piece of paper, then make another 1/4 1 1/2 inch above the previous one.(depending on mounts base height 1 1/2 usually standard between barrel and center of scope). Then place your rifle 10 to 12ft away and clamp it down in a vise with the lower dot centered looking down the bore. (won't work in semi-auto's and you have to remove the bolt on bolt guns). Once you have the lower dot centered in the bore and the gun is locked solid adjust the scope to center the upper dot. And you just bore sighted your rifle cheap and more accurate than a gunsmith can do with expensive tools.

(Turn the scope down to lower magnafication)

That guy probably couldn't hit the broad side of the barn even if his rifle was sighted in. I have to practice or I can't hit the broad side of the barn. That fella needs some one to go to the range and tell him exactly what to do. That is stupid to shoot 3 boxes and not ever hit paper. I usually try to shoot once every week or two, just 5 shots though. Keeps me where I need to be.

Maybe you should have offered to go with him and help him out. It sounds as if he is a bit ignorant about shooting. Nothing wrong with being ignorant, it just means you need a little help.

It doesn't sound hard headed at all, just confused and in need of some guidance. He might not be the sharpest tool in the box, but I bet he is also pretty frustrated right now which doesn't help. I bet with some proper instruction he could come around.

He is probably shooting way too much gun as well. I bet he flinches like all get out when shooting. In my opinion who ever sold an inexperianced shooter that gun ripped him off.

You could be write Paul. I think he is DEFINATLY over gunned. That field piece he is shooting, should be stuck on a carriadge and hauled by horses. I have sorta invited myself along on his next range session.

Cheaper yes,but I would gladlymake a bet with anyone thatI could place my first shotcloser to the bullseye at 100 yards using my boresighter.I may not win every time,but I am sure that if I made the same bet toseveral people,I would be taking money home.

Well I am glad you made the offer. I just hope he has the sense and patience to listen to what you tell him.

If you can take a different rifle for him to shoot, just to see if it helps any or so he can get a feel for what he needs to do with the bigger one. Unelss he already has one.

Something to help with recoil wouldn't be a bad idea either. Like a recoil pad or a gun rest that helps soak up recoil.

Let us know what happens after you help him out a little. If he is to macho to take your advice or try something different he may be screwed. At least you know you tried though.

I do understand where many people learn not to trust boresighters.Many people have a gun borseighted at a shop and the job is often not done properly.To be able to do a proper boresight,you must know your boresighter and have proper arbors.The grid in my own boresighter is not centered perfectly,but after using itmany times,I now know that and take it into account.When dealing with the bigger shops,several people are using the boresighter,and none of them isusually familiar with it.They blindlytrust that the arbors and grid are true,and the result is ascope that often is not even on the paper at 100 yards.While a boresight should never besubstituted for a proper sight in,I am always on the paper at 100 yards and usuallywithinthree or four inchesof the bullseye.

Hard headed or not, if he's tough enough, determined enough, and wealthy enough to shoot 3 boxes of 300 ultra mags, there has to be some hope for the dude. If you help him through thisand he's successful in the field you've done a good thing, Crew Dawg! Good Luck!
