Default .204

I am thinking about buying a .204 for coyote hunting. Wondering if anyone has one and what you think of it?

I've actually had one before they ever came out....mine was built on a Remington action and the 223 case. A great little round and a fine coyote killer.....prairie dogs are also toast when that thing gets out of the case.

As good as it is, I still like my .223 and especially the 40 grain loads for it.

Darn thing is dirt cheap to shoot.....shoots about 3,800'/sec...extremely accurate (its a sako) and has about the same range as the .204.

Go ahead and get a .204.....you'll like it but it won't really do much that the 223 won't do.

I have one in a Ruger #1. The best I can get the gun to group is 1'' -11/2'' groups and that is on a good day. Trigger is too heavy. I never shoot it much. I prefer my RRA .223 and my Savage mod 12BVSS's in 22.250. It is a great round though; my gun just doesn't shoot it well.I collect guns though. If this is your only varmint rifle or you don't plan on owning many I would get a .223 and a 22.250 1st. I prefer the 22.250 because it so fast and so accurate. .223 is very accurate and ammo is cheap.

I have one in an encore. Very accurate. Some days its .5MOA. Its pretty devistating on groundhogs, but the only thing I don't like, is cleaning. You have to use a .2" rod and it flexs alot. On an encore, its tough.

If I had to do it over, I would have got an 22-250.

If you call Ruger they will tell you...(if you push them) that their standard of accuracy for that rifle is 1 1/2" at 50 yards.....if you return it to them they'll just send it back.....it's within their standards.

.204 rifles normally shoot much better than that.......most bolt actions shoot well under an inch with at least one bullet weight.

I dont have one but my brother-in-law has it in a ruger m77 mkII with a lueplod lr scope and he loves it . I think that I would opt for the .223,22-250- or the .220 swift before that round. I have a swift and it is my favorite rifle to shoot.I do like the manufactures trying to keep us looking at new rifles with all the new caliburs they keep coming out with. But it is hard to beat some of the oldest rounds around ie; .220 swift,30-06,30-30,45/70.ect,sure seems like they get compared to alot.

Thanx for the info. Maybe I will have to look more at .223 or 22-250.

If you dont reload, finding ammuniton can be a chore. Not every manufacturer is making it. I think a good 22-250 or .223 would be a better choice. I buy the usa white and black box loads in .223 from Walmarts. They are a 45 gr. jhp at 3600 fps. I use these every once in awhile for kicksto deer hunt out of a ar-15 type rifleand actually took a whitetail at 323 yards 2 years ago with one shot. It ran about 10 yards and fell over stone dead. They make these loads in the 22-250 also at 4000 fps.
