Default Scope mount for Springfield '03 ?

My Dad has an old sporterized '03 with the standard military peep sight.
I'd like to put some glass on it for some hunting.
-Anybody got info on how to mount a scope on this thing?
-Are there different options?
-Can I keep the peep on it for backup if the scope gets hosed?

Thanks
-Bulz

Leupold makes a mount for the Springfield. You will need to drill and tap the receiver.

S&K and B-Square both produce mounts for the 1903A3. Might even be no drill/no tap.

I had Weaver mounts put on my Springfield many years ago. I had them drilled and tapped. They've been solid ever since. I'd be suspect of mounts that weren'tscrewed into the receiver.

I used a Redfield JR. mount on my 03-A3 in .308 Norma Magnum, and it always worked well. A Leupold mount of the same design would be as good. There are many other excellent options, such as the Williams Gun Sight CO. side mount, the Griffin & Howe, or the Jaeger (New England Custom Guns). If you are looking for economy, the old-style Weaver bases and rings are the least expensive, and are as tough as anything!

All decent mounts will require at leas three holes to be drilled & tapped into the receiver. A side mount won't obscure the markings on the receiver ring.....
